Job Description

This vacancy has now expired.

Under supervision, with some latitude for independent action or decision, selected candidate will perform investigation and claims processing tasks related to workers’ compensation cases. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Review accident reports and other documents related to claims to determine workers' compensation coverage.
2. Review cases for correction of awards or decisions and process payments resulting from hearings by New York State Workers’ Compensation Board.
3. Review cases for compliance with NYCHA policies and procedures.
4. Enter and maintain electronic records of cases.
5. Gather information from case files or computer records and prepare written material and forms for distribution.
6. Communicate with insurance carrier via email, telephone and on-line system.
7. Respond to inquiries and/or discuss injured employee’s obligations and entitlements under NYCHA’s policies.
8. Implement the pro-rated benefits for compensable claims in accordance with contractual agreements.
9. Compute benefit payments accruing to prospective recipients.
10. Investigate disability claims by contacting pertinent parties.
11. Maintain highly confidential information.
12. Review and forward medical reports to insurance carrier for continuation of benefits.
13. Assist in the processing of claims utilizing manual and/or automated office systems.
14. Prepare and file workers’ compensation documents.

NOTE: IF THIS APPOINTMENT IS MADE ON A PROVISIONAL BASIS PURSUANT TO 65 OF THE NYS CIVIL SERVICE LAW, NO TENURE OR PERMANENCE ACCRUES TO AN INCUMBENT IN THIS POSITION BY VIRTUE OF SUCH APPOINTMENT.

Minimum Qualifications

1. An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by 6 semester credits in mathematics, statistics, accounting, and/or actuarial science; or

2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one year of satisfactory full-time experience implementing the provisions of a workers’ compensation or retirement or medical benefits plan, involving the use of mathematical, statistical, actuarial, or accounting computations; or

3. A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1" or “2" above. Satisfactory completion of 30 semester credits from an accredited college, including 3 semester credits in mathematics, statistics, accounting and/or actuarial science may be substituted for 6 months of the full-time experience as described in “2" above. However, all candidates must possess at least a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent.

SPECIAL NOTE:
A. Upon completion of one year of satisfactory continuous service in Assignment Level Ia, employees shall be assigned to Assignment Level Ib.
B. To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level Ib or II, individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, either:
1. One additional year of satisfactory full-time experience implementing the provisions of a workers' compensation or retirement or medical benefits plan involving the use of mathematical, statistical, actuarial, or accounting computations; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 6 semester credits in mathematics, statistics, accounting and/or actuarial science.

SPECIAL NOTE:
C. To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III, individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, either:
1. Two additional years of full-time experience as described in "Note B. 1" above; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 6 semester credits in mathematics, statistics, accounting and/or actuarial science and one additional year of satisfactory full-time experience as described in "Note B. 1" above.

1. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Access, Excel and Outlook). 2. Experience with Authority’s timekeeping procedures. 3. Adept at maintaining complex digital files. 4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 5. Ability to handle high volume of work and meet strict deadlines
