The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the city towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,000 diverse professionals and knowledge experts

The DOC is recruiting a Visit Facilitator/Greeter for the Department’s Visits areas. Under general supervision, the candidate will be responsible for welcoming visitors, providing them with comprehensive guidance and support, and helping ensure that both visitors and detainees have a positive, meaningful visit experience. The individual will also facilitate activities for children and serve as a liaison between visitors and uniform staff. Duties of this position will include but are not limited to:

- Greeting and acknowledging all visitors in a friendly, polite, and professional manner.
- Informing visitors of relevant services, directions, visiting hours, and DOC visit procedures.
- Engaging with families and providing immediate, responsive customer service regarding any inquiries.
- Providing books, games and facilitating activities for children throughout the visit experience.
- Providing information to visitors regarding any available family-related services.
- Addressing concerns and troubleshooting challenges that may arise during the visit process.
- Ensuring that children’s activities and equipment is sanitized, organized, and secure.
- Eliciting input, collecting data and providing summaries of visitor engagement with specific activities and services.
- Working collaboratively with Officers, non-uniformed DOC staff, and providers’ staff to create a family-friendly visit experience.
- Providing culturally competent services in accordance with departmental policies and practices.
- Performing related duties as assigned.

Special Note
This position has been funded by a grant from the Department of Justice on a temporary basis.


Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills

- Bilingual in English and Spanish - Experience working with children - Individuals involved with or impacted by the justice system are encouraged to apply
Residency Requirement

New York City residency is is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
