The Bronx District Attorney’s Office is seeking a well-qualified staff whose diverse backgrounds reflect an ability to serve the over 1.4 million members of the Bronx County community and pursue a safer Bronx through fair justice. The Professional Responsibility Unit within the General Counsel Division, ensures that the Bronx District Attorney’s staff comply with all applicable professional and ethical standards, and investigates complaints against Assistant District Attorneys made by a member of the public, a defendant, a police officer, a defense attorney, or a judge. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel and General Counsel, the Unit Chief is responsible for all facets of the operation of the Professional Responsibility Unit.
Job Responsibilities
Oversee the day-today operations of the Unit
Ensure compliance with all applicable professional and ethical standards including the Rules of Professional Conduct (RPCs) and the requirements under Ch. 68 of the New York City Charter set out by the NYC Conflicts of Interest Board.
Investigate complaints against Assistant District Attorneys made by a member of the public, a defendant, a police officer, a defense attorney, or a judge.
Work with other agencies, such as the Attorney Grievance Committee, the Commission on Judicial Conduct as well as the Appellate Division for the First Department.
Advise the Office on all matters relating to professional responsibility, the practice of law and prosecutorial and legal ethics concerning matters both in the Office and pending in Court.
Assist the Litigation Training Bureau with training Assistants and Professional Staff on their professional and ethical duties.
Work with the New York City Conflict of Interest Board to review requests for secondary employment to ensure that no conflict of interest exists.
Work with outside organizations to study and implement best practices for criminal prosecutors.
A Juris Doctorate degree required
10+ years of trial experience and conducting in depth investigations of complex matters
Admission to the New State Bar required
U.S. Citizenship and New York State residency are required as of first day of employment
Background in the field of Professional Responsibility and Ethics and an excellent in-depth working knowledge of the New York Rules of Professional Conduct strongly preferred
Member in good standing of the NY State Bar.
Strong knowledge of, and experience with, the New York State Penal Law and Criminal Procedure Law.
Excellent writing skills
Ability to understand and respond clearly and effectively (oral/written) to complex legal issues.
Ability to exercise good judgment and strong ethics
Ability to analytically solve issues or problems from inception through conclusion
Exhibit an ability to maintain confidentiality of information
