The NYC Department of Finance (DOF) is responsible for administering the tax revenue laws of the city fairly, efficiently, and transparently to instill public confidence and encourage compliance while providing exceptional customer service.
The Sheriff’s Office serves and enforces court mandates, orders of protection, warrants, decrees, and property seizures. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office conducts criminal investigations of real property fraud, tax crimes, and the trafficking of illegal and untaxed tobacco products and synthetic narcotics, and monitors defendants referred by the courts for electronic monitoring.
The Sheriff's Office is seeking a highly motivated, detail oriented and responsible candidates to serve as Undersheriffs. Under general direction, with wide latitude for independent or unreviewed action or decision, the Undersheriffs will perform work of a difficult and responsible nature in managing the operations of the County Division, or other equivalent assignments, in order to approve new processes as to legal sufficiency and enforce court orders in accordance with the law. The positions encompass supervisory and responsible administrative work of varying degrees of difficulty and responsibility in the administration of activities. The Undersheriffs act for and in the name of the City Sheriff in carrying out duties prescribed by the Civil Practice Law and Rules and other laws.
Undersheriffs are also responsible for the following:
- Under general direction with latitude for independent or unreviewed action or decision, performs work of a difficult and responsible nature.
- Is in charge of the operation of a unit, tour, joint operation, or county command of the Sheriff's Division.
- Supervises Deputy City Sheriffs Assignment Levels I, II, Supervising Deputy Sheriff Level I and other assigned staff. Assigns staff and monitors unit activities, files, reports, logbooks, records, etc. Evaluates the performance of subordinates.
- Supervises Deputy City Sheriffs in the execution of court mandates and orders, including seizures of property, writs of assistance, and warrants of evictions. Reviews and verifies property that is exempt by law from seizure or when property is required to be seized through breaking and entering.
- Coordinates with law enforcement agencies, litigants, court systems, and other government agencies in the execution of process, joint operations, patrol work and other field functions.
- Sets priorities of work assignments such as process executions, seizures, evictions, arrests and service of process to reflect workflow needs. Determines if an individual has immunity from service and/or arrest.
- Oversees Deputy City Sheriffs during criminal arrests and arraignments and the apprehension of persons pursuant to civil orders and warrants of arrest. Responds to unusual occurrences during arrests.
- Advises staff on application of laws, rules, and procedures, including Civil Practice Law and Rules, Penal Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law, and other applicable laws of the State of New York and other jurisdictions. Arranges for and supervises all aspects of Sheriff's sales including the sale of real property.
- Uses automated office systems and other computer technology to input and retrieve information, including researching databases to identify judgment debtors and stolen property.
- Reviews or approve documents related to the collection of money.
- Reviews legal documents for legal sufficiency and filing fees and takes appropriate action.
- Prepares written correspondences such as letters to lawyers, bankers and government agencies.
- Directs and approves the seizure, delivery, transfer, sale or release of all property and monies.
- Oversee the investigations of companies or individuals for the purpose of executing a legal process and other unusual incident.
- Supervise investigations involving Electronic Monitoring clients who violate regulations illegally cut their monitoring bracelet and abscond from the program.
- Ensure that mandates of the court are followed in preparing case recommendation on defendants applying to enter the Electronic Monitoring Program.
- Prepare court ordered reports and ensure that absconders that are caught are delivered to the court safely and securely.

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 30 semester credits in accounting, law, criminal justice, economics, business administration, public administration or other closely related field and two years of satisfactory full-time professional or paraprofessional experience in law, accounting, auditing, criminal justice, business administration, public administration, investigation, civil enforcement, law enforcement, or a closely related field, one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or
2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization, and four years of experience as described in "1" above, including one year in a supervisory capacity; or
3. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and at least one year of supervisory experience.
Peace Officer Status
This class of positions is designated for Peace Officer status under the New York State Criminal Procedure Law. Therefore, candidates must be found qualified to serve as Peace Officers. Eligibility for Peace Officer status must be maintained for the duration of employment.
License Requirement
A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
Special Note:
To be eligible for assignment to Assignment Level II, employees must have: 1) at least one year of experience as a Supervising Deputy Sheriff, Assignment Level I; and 2) completed the agency administered training program covering laws, regulations and procedures enforced by the Sheriff's Division.
