The Van Cortlandt Park Landscape & Natural Areas Management Team oversees 600+ acres of forests, meadows and wetlands and 65 acres of turf, and performs other horticultural duties throughout the rest of the Park’s 1,146 acres.

Major Responsibilities
- Under general direction, manage all phases of the care and preservation of athletic fields and lawns in Van Cortlandt Park.
- Update the Parade Ground Hotline and manage the park-wide ballfield red flag system on a daily basis.
- Conduct soil sampling, site preparation, planting, mulching, irrigation, pruning, weed and pest control.
- Install and maintain related signs and fences.
- Maintain equipment, vehicles and computerized irrigation systems. Performs basic repairs to irrigation system.
- Operate tractors, mowers and other heavy equipment. Set and maintain mowing and maintenance schedules for lawns and fields.
- Train and supervise employees and volunteers in various horticultural tasks and various aspects of general park maintenance.
- Maintain records and prepare written reports. Develop and oversee inventory management of tools, equipment and supplies.
- Recommend purchases; select and order plants, supplies and new equipment.
- Demonstrate professionalism with staff and the public and serve as a role model of high work ethics and performance.
- Perform other horticultural and park maintenance duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills

1. Proficiency in computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. 2. Strong writing, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. 3. Excellent customer service skills. 4. Horticulture experience. 5. Horticulture certificates. 6. Ability to work weekends and holidays. 7. Valid New York State driver license.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency is required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
