Traffic Control & Engineering is responsible for administration, engineering and operations related to the installation, manufacturing, maintenance and removal of signs, flexible bollards, moveable barriers, in-house traffic sign production and other traffic control devices. The office draws on the expertise and talents of engineers, sign designers, planners, inspectors, IT experts, analysts, and others to help the agency achieve Vision Zero and other city goals.
Traffic Control & Engineering is seeking a highly capable Transportation Specialist I to serve in Maspeth’s Exterior Operations group. The candidate will perform tasks of moderate difficulty in the specialized fields of traffic control and engineering. Under general supervision, in the field and in the office, the candidate conducts and may supervise staff conducting professional transportation and traffic projects, studies and investigations. The candidate reviews and approves work orders; generates repair orders on behalf of and provides general support to supervisors for all inspection matters within Maspeth’s Exterior Operations; ensures compliance with plans, established standards and specifications; and conducts traffic surveys and studies citywide. The candidate will pre-inspect highway sign and support conditions to better prepare the highway crew for upcoming work assignments; perform field checks of street furniture, vertical elements, and rubber speed bumps for installation and maintenance; read and interpret drawings to pre-inspect locations and confirm existence of proper pavement markings; provide direct support and make recommendations to the Deputy Director of Maspeth Exterior Operations. The candidate will be expected to work throughout the five boroughs. The ideal candidate should be detail oriented, accurate, and a capable team player with a positive attitude and possess excellent oral and written communication skills. The candidate will be asked to work collaboratively and inclusively, seeking to cultivate continued professional development and effectively communicate with all stakeholders.

1. A master's degree in transportation engineering, mathematics, urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, or related physical and social science fields; or
2. A baccalaureate degree in engineering from an accredited college and one year of full-time satisfactory experience performing technical work on roadway transportation and traffic studies and area-wide traffic programs; or
3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above; or
4. An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college and four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above; or
5. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above.
SPECIAL NOTE:
In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements above:
To be assigned to Assignment Level II, the candidate must have an additional year of experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" listed under "2" above.
To be assigned to Assignment Level III, the candidate must have an additional two years of experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" listed under "2" above.
The ideal candidate will be a creative problem solver, detail-oriented, adaptive under pressure, and highly resourceful in carrying out tasks. They should have excellent communication skills and exhibit strong leadership qualities with a proven track record of effective interaction with management and the ability to motivate staff. Additionally, the ideal candidate should possess strong collaborative and interpersonal skills and be proficient in DOT’s Sign Information Management System (SIMS). The candidate should have experience working in the field with an emphasis on taking measurements.
