Parking Operations, Planning and Analysis is seeking to hire five (5) highly skilled and qualified candidates to perform the duties, tasks, and responsibilities as a Traffic Device Maintainer (TDM) to work in the Meter Maintenance Unit (MMU).

TDMs will prepare, install, maintain, and repair traffic control devices, such as multi-space parking meters, bicycle racks, signs, stanchions, and supports; operate, maintain, and make minor adjustments to motor vehicles, air compressors, pavement breakers, snowplows and other business-related field and shop equipment. Perform manual labor in the loading and unloading of trucks and the placement of traffic devices; climbs and work from ladders. The candidate must possess knowledge of hand tools, power tools, diagnostic tools, computers to assemble, diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, program, service, repair, install; mechanical, electrical, and electronic technology-based equipment / devices. Additionally, MMU is embarking on a Citywide project to update all 14,500 multi-space parking meters with License Plate Recognition input and other technical upgrades that needs to be completed by the end of 2025. TDMs will also work on various projects including graffiti removal, routine sequence of patrol meter inspections and overall maintenance of the meters. TDMs are also assigned to mandatory snow and ice removal duties by use of hand shovels, snow blowers, vehicle plows, specialized manned snow removal equipment and ice choppers for various municipal locations throughout NYC.

TDMs are necessary to address the non-structural condition flags, such as signs and other traffic control devices, on bridge structures. They install, maintain and repair signs on the roadways, off street parking facilities and bridge structures; manufactures signs; uses tools, equipment, material and hardware; installs and maintains parking meters as well as fixtures (including bike racks, benches, fencing, vertical elements, car stops, bumper pipes) and installs and lays out permanent and temporary pavement markings. They also conduct comprehensive cleaning and sweeping operations, managing trash removal, and overseeing the safe and proper disposal of debris and essential emergency response support for snow removal at designated locations citywide.

TDMs may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended work shifts in all types of inclement weather. They are required to perform other related operational duties and responsibilities as needed.

Hours/Shift: 40 hours/ M-F, 5:00AM to 1:30PM

Minimum Qualifications

1. Two years of full-time satisfactory experience using hand and/or power tools to assemble, repair, maintain and/or install mechanical and/or electrical devices; or

2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one year of full-time satisfactory experience as described in “1” above; or

3. Graduation from an approved four-year trade, technical or vocational high school with a mechanical or electrical major; or

4. At least one year of full-time satisfactory experience as described in “1” above plus sufficient training in the mechanical or electrical field acquired in an approved trade, technical or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of such training.

Driver License Requirement: At the time of appointment, eligibles must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with no restrictions valid in the State of New York or a Class B Learner’s Permit. Serious moving violations, license suspension or accident record may disqualify. Appointees with a Class B Learner’s permit who do not obtain their Class B CDL with no restrictions by the end of the probationary period will be terminated. This Class B Commercial Driver’s License with no restrictions must be maintained for the duration of employment."


Preferred Skills

- Preference will be given to candidates that possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with no restrictions. - Candidate should possess advance skills in the use of mechanical, electrical, power tools, related devices, and equipment. Advanced computer skills desired. - Ability to work in all types of inclement weather.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
