The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,000 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.
The New York City Department of Correction has a opportunity for an experienced Supervisor Painter to support the Facilities, Maintenance & Repair Division. Typical duties include but are not limited to:
- Supervise and participate in painting operations to include the painting of buildings, areas, signs, equipment and furniture and the hanging of wallpaper and other decorative wall coverings in accordance with blueprints, sketches and verbal instructions.
- Plan and schedule work for the painter's, ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate manning, space and facilities for subsequent performance of duties.
- Prepare annual performance evaluations, review them with staff.
- Estimate time, cost and materials for painting projects; determine sequences of painting operations and methods to be used to include scaffolding and rigging, color blending and matching.
- Review thickness and thinness of paint applied to objects by painters.
- Inspect painted surfaces for paint coverage, flow of paint, and color quality.
- Coordinate workflow and schedules to ensure deadlines are met and priorities are recognized.
- Explain Department of Correction policies & procedures to assigned staff and enforce safety regulations and guidelines.
- Interpret specifications and job orders to painters, and assign duties.
- Monitor inventory and requisition materials, supplies and equipment and inspect merchandise upon arrival.
- Attend Painters Civil Service Certification Pools with the Supervisor of Mechanics and interview candidates.
- Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
- Conform to established time and leave regulations and policies; provide proper notification for absences and tardiness.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Education and Experience Requirements: By the last day of the Application Period you must have:
1. Six years of full time satisfactory experience as a painter acquired within the last fifteen years, one year of which must have been spent performing the duties of a supervising painter; or
2. Not less than four years of such experience plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade or vocational school.
However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as a supervising painter acquired within the last fifteen years.
- Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel operations - Efficienct knowledge of all safety precautions including but not limited to OSHA, State and federal - Coordinate and arrange people, give instructions, prioritize activities, quality control on products, resolve problems, safety procedures. - Selecting, mixing, and apply surface coatings which successfully match and/or restore historic interior or exterior surfaces. - Proper care of equipment used in the painting trade. - Selecting brushes, rollers, pads, mitts and other related accessories for applying paint. - Safe operation and maintenance of paint equipment
