Job Description
The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person.

Under supervision, selected candidate performs moderately difficult work with latitude for independent judgement. Typical tasks include but are not limited to the following:
- Oversees and supervises staff in answering telephone inquiries from customers and other agencies requesting autopsy reports and related records.
- Supervises the analysis, review, and quality assurance of medical records to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Oversees the logging of requests for ME autopsy reports and complete case files into CMS RRU, ensuring proper documentation and tracking.
- Supervises the processing of subpoenas served on OCME for medical examiner’s case files, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
- Coordinates the retrieval and return of case files to the Municipal archives, supervising staff involved in these processes.
- Provides training, guidance, and support to team members to improve workflow and service quality.
- Performs other supervisory duties as assigned, including staff scheduling, performance evaluations, and process improvements.
- Serves as backup Administrator in the absence of the Director
- Assists with Special Projects as needed.

Qualification Requirements
1. Completion of a one year course of study in medical record technology approved by a recognized accrediting organization; or
2. An associate degree in medical record technology from an accredited college
having a program approved by a recognized accrediting organization; or
3. A certificate issued upon successful completion of a correspondence course in medical record technology given by a recognized accrediting organization;
or
4. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a state's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and two years of full-time experience analyzing, coding, and indexing medical records as a medical record librarian.
Special Note
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, at least one year of full-time experience as a medical record librarian.
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, at least two years of full-time experience as a medical record librarian.
- Successful candidates should have experience in data entry. - Knowledge of various computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. - Ability to type at least 35 words per minute.
