The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
DEP's Fleet Services Division oversees the purchase, use, maintenance and management of DEP vehicles, special equipment and related services. Fleet Services also monitors compliance with NYC Fleet and Vision Zero mandates, fuel and E-ZPass rules, parking and traffic regulations, and driver safety initiatives. The dynamic Fleet Services team provides complete life cycle management (design / build, distribution / maintenance, and relinquishment) of approximately 5,000 pieces of equipment throughout the 5 boros and NYC’s unique watershed.
DEP is currently seeking a dynamic individual to perform the role of Supervisor of Mechanics. In this role, responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Under general supervision supervise, and direct work assigned to personnel in connection with the repair, overhaul, and maintenance of various types of mechanical equipment, motor vehicles, and automotive equipment.
- Oversee staff involved with the maintenance of garage facilities. Prioritize repairs and make assignments accordingly. Ensure that all automotive work is properly diagnosed and repaired in a safe and that work is completed within scheduled deadlines. Work to improve and maintain low out of service rates. Coordinate repair and training concerns with borough garages and operational staff.
- Ensure work orders, labor, and repair invoices are entered into the appropriate Fleet databases in a timely manner. Maintain hard files on parts room inventory as well as vehicle and small equipment repairs.
- Advise senior management regarding the use, operation, abuse and repair of equipment. Prepare or attain incident and accident reports for all vehicles receiving non-routine repairs.
- In Coordination with borough staff set up schedules for vehicles and small equipment for Preventative Maintenance Inspections (PMIs), seasonal maintenance and Motor Vehicle Inspections (MVIs). Monitor quality of all preventive maintenance and PMIs, that they may be performed correctly and that all relevant conditions are noted and addressed.
- Order, stock and inventory all needed parts and supplies. Administer Parts Plus and all database programs relating to parts and contracts. When necessary sign requisitions for service contracts, small purchase orders, parts, tools, and equipment and keep related records. Prepare repair orders for body, glass and chassis repair due to accidents. Monitor and ensure quality of outside vendor repairs.
- Maintain clean and orderly garages that are in compliance with environmental regulations at all times. Track the storage and disposal of automotive waste products.
- Prepare reports as requested and provide a high level of customer service.
Qualification Requirements
1. Seven years of full-time satisfactory experience as an Auto Machinist, Auto
Mechanic, Auto Mechanic (Diesel), Electrician (Automobile) or Machinist, two
years of which must have been at a supervisory level; or
2. At least five years of experience as described in "1" above, plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade, technical or vocational high school, or relevant education in an accredited college, to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade or vocational high school. One year of acceptable experience will be credited for each 30 semester credits in college. However, all candidates must have the two years of supervisory experience described in "1" above.
License Requirements
Possession of a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment. For appointment to certain positions a Class B Commercial Driver License valid in the State of New York with no restrictions may be required. The Class B Commercial Driver License with no restrictions must be maintained for the duration of employment.
