The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) provides for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods in the City of New York and maintains and enhances the transportation infrastructure crucial to the economic vitality and quality of life of City residents. The mission of Fleet Services is to assure the safe working condition of the department’s motorized vehicles and equipment; ensuring the operational readiness of the vehicle and mobile equipment fleet; instituting compliance programs supporting fleet preventive maintenance, state-mandated inspections, vehicular emissions testing and schedules.
Fleet Services seeks highly motivated individuals to support the programmatic goals of Fleet Operations. The successful candidates will serve as a key members of the Fleet Services repair shops and administration team. Under general supervision, candidates will be responsible for the day to day operations of vehicles and equipment; supervise and is responsible for the work of assigned personnel in connection with the repair, overhaul and maintenance of various types of mechanical equipment, motor vehicles and automotive equipment.
Specific duties may include but not limited to:
- Oversee the operations of all vehicle and equipment in repair shops.
- Ensure that an adequate supply of proper parts is maintained in all stockrooms and that equipment needs are met in assigned work areas.
- Review Labor, Work Order and Productivity reports ensuring that all employees are actively working on fleet assignments in a timely and efficient manner; which includes managing Fleet’s vehicle and equipment out of service rates.
- Update work orders and job status daily.
- Prioritize repairs and distribute job assignments to staff accordingly.
- Ensure that staff completely and legibly fill out vehicle turn-in sheets and ensure that work orders for completed repairs are updated to include labor, parts, and commercial charges.
- Run NYS-DMV motor vehicle inspection report in compliance with NYS-DMV guidelines.
- Make visual assessments of progress on vehicle repairs.
- Conduct quality assurance checks on vehicles.
- May interpret mechanical drawings.
- Enforce safety precautions, and all Fleets policies and procedures.
- Keep and maintain all records and makes reports.
- Prepare and conduct staff evaluations, identify training requirements, mentor and positively manage staff as well as carry out disciplinary action when required.
- Provide a discrimination-free work environment for Fleet Services.
Qualification Requirements
1. Seven years of full-time satisfactory experience as an Auto Machinist, Auto
Mechanic, Auto Mechanic (Diesel), Electrician (Automobile) or Machinist, two
years of which must have been at a supervisory level; or
2. At least five years of experience as described in "1" above, plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade, technical or vocational high school, or relevant education in an accredited college, to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade or vocational high school. One year of acceptable experience will be credited for each 30 semester credits in college. However, all candidates must have the two years of supervisory experience described in "1" above.
License Requirements
Possession of a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment. For appointment to certain positions a Class B Commercial Driver License valid in the State of New York with no restrictions may be required. The Class B Commercial Driver License with no restrictions must be maintained for the duration of employment.
*******Only candidates that have applied to the Supervisor of Mechanics (Mechanical Equipment) Civil Service Exam #0520 will be considered****** - Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver License with a tow endorsement. - A minimum of 2 years of supervising experience through either private sector or City/public work. - Ability to produce concise, accurate reports and work comfortably with MS-Office to create Excel Spreadsheets and similar analytical tools. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to prioritize, manage time, and engage in multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. - Organized, highly motivated, and able to work well independently and as part of a team. Ability to work under pressure, and time constraints. - Good time management. Candidate’s absences and tardiness should not be excessive and must be within department guidelines. - Ability to exercise good judgment as to when to elevate issues and maintain confidentiality.
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
