The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.
The Supervisory Investigator will lead a team within the Internal Investigations section of the Applicant Investigation Unit, overseeing a staff of up to seven investigators responsible for ensuring the integrity and suitability of NYC Correction Officer candidates. The role involves supervising and conducting thorough social media and telephone monitoring investigations, managing investigative schedules, and ensuring the adherence to investigative policies and standards.
1. Supervision & Leadership
o Provide guidance and assistance to investigators during complex investigations, including interviews with candidates to address discrepancies related to potential gang affiliations or associations.
o Conduct one-on-one and team meetings to monitor performance and address unit objectives.
o Establish accountability metrics and ensure staff compliance with policies and procedures.
2. Investigative Oversight
o Ensure investigations meet quality, timeliness, and efficiency standards.
o Conduct daily reviews of investigative reports to verify accuracy and completeness.
o Ensure adherence to social media guidelines by all investigative staff.
o Review and prepare detailed reports based on investigative findings, using independent judgment.
3. Candidate Assessment
o Oversee the character and background review process to determine the suitability of Correction Officer candidates.
o Authenticate documents and gather information from confidential databases, public records, and other sources.
o Assist in the background/character disqualification and appeals process when applicable.
4. Data Collection & Reporting
o Collect, process, and submit bi-weekly statistical data regarding ongoing investigations.
o Maintain investigative schedules for both staff and candidates.
5. Collaboration
o Work with John Jay College and the DOC Academy to facilitate the cadet program, ensuring candidates complete all necessary medical, psychological, agility, and character/background clearances.
o Coordinate with other city, state, and federal agencies to verify civil service employment and application status.
INVESTIGATOR (DISCIPLINE) (DOC - 31164
1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of satisfactory full-time experience in one or more of the fields of accounting, auditing, correction administration, criminal justice administration and planning, forensic science, inspection, investigation, law enforcement, personnel administration, police science, and security, or in a major operational area of the agency in which the appointment is to be made; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college; or
3. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above.
