TASK FORCE: Environmental Sustainability and Resiliency

UNIT: Resiliency Policy

JOB TITLE: One (1) Summer Intern

SUMMARY:

The Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is the City government's chief financial agency. OMB's staff of analysts and experts assembles and oversees the Mayor’s expense and capital budgets, which fund the services and activities of approximately 90 City agencies and entities.

The OMB Environmental Sustainability and Resiliency (ESR) Task Force tracks Citywide sustainability and resiliency funding, and supports relevant agencies in the formulation, design, evaluation, and management of environmental sustainability and resiliency policies and investments. The intern will work in the ESR Resiliency Policy Unit, a multidisciplinary team that conducts policy analysis and special projects. The unit also supports the development of New York City’s Climate Budget, which will publicly quantify the impacts of City actions toward climate-related goals and targets, promoting Citywide coordination and accountability.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The intern will lead the following project under general supervision, with latitude for independent initiative and judgement:

Part of the work of Climate Budgeting is to understand how much environmental/climate progress we have made in the past, how much progress is expected in the near future, and how to achieve long-term goals. The intern undertaking this summer project will aid in work on city government and external (including academic) data, models, and maps in order to inform resiliency decision making. They may also work on assessing the climate adaptation impacts of budgeted city work and modeling the key performance indicators and data used to quantify those impacts. The intern will get to learn about how city government agencies interact and may be asked to write memos or other materials to aid in Climate Budgeting, in addition to data analysis. The intern will regularly present updates on this to the rest of the ESR team.


Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.


Preferred Skills

Description of Specific Skills Required: Strong research background and written skills Experience in GIS required Experience working with advanced or scientific models required Experience working in Excel spreadsheets and Microsoft Office required Experience in Python or R strongly preferred Problem solving and creativity – demonstrated ability to work on open-ended questions and problems Team work and collaboration – comfort asking questions, contributing to the group environment, & incorporating feedback General understanding of climate change and sustainability and how extreme heat and water impact New York City – some coursework in sustainability or environmental science strongly preferred Professionalism and ability to represent the agency in-person, virtually, and in writing with integrity and respect Fact-driven mindset and ability to delve into data, ask critical questions, and maintain a sense of scientific skepticism REQUIREMENTS: Graduate interns must be currently enrolled or accepted into a graduate program. Candidates should have strong analytical, quantitative, research and communication skills. Additionally, candidates must be proficient in MS Word and Excel To participate in the OMB Summer Internship Program, graduate students must be currently enrolled or accepted into a graduate program Compensation/Duration: Summer Graduate Intern $19.50 per hour Internships will run for 10 weeks, from June 3, 2024 to August 9, 2024. The work must be done during the regular workday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. – no evenings or weekends.
