TASK FORCE: Tax Policy & Economic Analysis

UNIT: Property and Aggregate Revenue

JOB TITLE: One (1) Summer Intern

SUMMARY:

The Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is the City government's chief financial agency. OMB's staff of analysts and experts assembles and oversees the Mayor’s expense and capital budgets, which fund the services and activities of approximately 90 City agencies and entities.

The Tax Policy, Forecasting and Economic Analysis Task Force is responsible for forecasting and monitoring trends in the local, national and global economies, including tax revenues, unemployment, and population growth. Within this task force, the Tax Policy Unit monitors and forecasts revenues from City taxes, including consumption taxes, the personal income tax, business taxes and more. Annually, the City collects more than $73 billion in tax revenues. The property and aggregate revenue unit monitors and forecasts property and property related taxes amounting to over $35 billion and provides the reporting function of all the tax revenue collections.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The intern will lead the following project under general supervision, with latitude for independent initiative and judgement:

Restructure data and contribute to maintaining and improving the annual and monthly forecasts and collections reports, as well as forecast comparisons. These reports are integral to OMB's role in the City's transparency, accountability, and communications.


Minimum Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.


Preferred Skills

Description of Specific Skills Required: -Comfort in working with large datasets using Excel. - Experience in either R or Python, - Demonstrated interest in public policy, public service, economics, finance, quantitative methods and/or accounting. - Excellent organization and communication skills, - Ability to work collaboratively with the taskforce to further its mission-oriented goals. -Desirable, but not required: Familiarity with SQL, EViews, Stata REQUIREMENTS: Undergraduate interns must be currently enrolled or accepted into an accredited college or university. Strong analytical, research and communications skills are required. Candidates must have familiarity in MS Word and Excel To participate in the OMB Summer Internship Program, undergraduate students must be enrolled or accepted into a college or university. Compensation/Duration: Summer Undergraduate Intern $16.50 per hour Internships will run for 10 weeks, from June 3, 2024 to August 9, 2024. The work must be done during the regular workday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. – no evenings or weekends.
