TASK FORCE: FEMA Disaster Recovery

UNIT: Insurance and Contract Administration & Capital Budget Management

JOB TITLE: One (1) Summer Intern

SUMMARY:

The Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is the City government's chief financial agency. OMB's staff of analysts and experts assembles and oversees the Mayor’s expense and capital budgets, which fund the services and activities of approximately 90 City agencies and entities.

The FEMA Disaster Recovery Task Force works with City, State, and federal agencies to help New York City recover from the lasting impacts of COVID-19, Hurricane Sandy, and other federally declared disaster events..

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The intern will lead the following project under general supervision, with latitude for independent initiative and judgement:

Support the City’s disaster recovery projects and learn the basics of grant management. Learn the City’s federal grants revenue realization process with the goal of suggesting and implementing improvements. Learn the basics of the FEMA grants process with particular emphasis on the National Flood Insurance Program. Become familiar with the NYC Financial Management System and how OMB uses QuickBase to monitor funding with the Grant Management System. Assist in reviewing large datasets and identifying buildings potentially at risk from climate-related disasters. Monitor City agency grant receivables and cash collection and produce reports for management.


Minimum Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.


Preferred Skills

Description of Specific Skills Required: Interest in learning about New York City governance, disaster recovery, and budgeting. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to learn new technology quickly. Ability to work independently as a member of a team with moderate supervision. Prior experience with accounting preferred. Prior experience with federal grants, administering large database management systems, using GIS software and/or programming language are all a plus. REQUIREMENTS: Undergraduate interns must be currently enrolled or accepted into an accredited college or university. Strong analytical, research and communications skills are required. Candidates must have familiarity in MS Word and Excel To participate in the OMB Summer Internship Program, undergraduate students must be enrolled or accepted into a college or university. Compensation/Duration: Summer Undergraduate Intern $16.50 per hour Internships will run for 10 weeks, from June 3, 2024 to August 9, 2024. The work must be done during the regular workday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. – no evenings or weekends.
