SUMMARY:

The Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is the City government's chief financial agency. OMB's staff of analysts and experts assembles and oversees the Mayor’s expense and capital budgets, which fund the services and activities of approximately 90 City agencies and entities.

The economic analysis unit is responsible for forecasting the New York City’s economy using statistical models. These projections are used for estimating future tax revenues and as inputs into other OMB analysis. In addition, the Econ unit also evaluates the economic impact of City funded development projects and policy changes and identifies potential risks to the City’s economy. All of these tasks require the curation and management of extensive databases of local and national economic data.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The intern will lead the following project under general supervision, with latitude for independent initiative and judgement:

There are several projects to which an intern could contribute, depending on interest. These include: (1) Create a research database of NYC apartment renovations data published by the NYC Department of Buildings and use the data to investigate the impact of 2019 state law changes affecting rent-regulated apartments; (2) Analyze the 2021 Housing and Vacancy Survey microdata, with an extension to the 2023 data if available by summer; and (3) Investigate the implied NYC population shifts due to the pandemic using school enrollment data from NYC and outlying regions.

As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.

Description of Specific Skills Required: All of our tasks require strong analytical skills, attention for detail, ability to work independently and an interest in economic data and analysis. We are looking for someone with a background in economics or data science and a familiarity with econometric and statistical software. While we use STATA, EViews, and R on a regular basis, familiarity with any other statistical software platforms (Python, SAS, SPSS, etc.) and an ability to transfer these skills to a new environment is also a possibility. REQUIREMENTS: Undergraduate interns must be currently enrolled or accepted into an accredited college or university. Strong analytical, research and communications skills are required. Candidates must have familiarity in MS Word and Excel To participate in the OMB Summer Internship Program, undergraduate students must be enrolled or accepted into a college or university. Compensation/Duration: Summer Undergraduate Intern $16.50 per hour Internships will run for 10 weeks, from June 3, 2024 to August 9, 2024. The work must be done during the regular workday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. – no evenings or weekends.
