The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire two (2) Stationary Engineer (Electric)’s (SEEs) within the Water Treatment Operations North Division, Water Treatment Operation Directorate for positions located at Shaft 18 in Valhalla, New York. The Water Treatment Operations North, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of water treatment facilities. The core mission is to protect the public by providing safe and clean drinking water to the residents of New York City and several upstate communities.

Under general supervision, of the Senior Stationary Engineer (Electric), the SEEs will support the operation and maintenance of electrically powered plant equipment at various water treatment plants in the WTO-North Division. They will will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of electro-mechanical equipment. Specific duties include:

- Operating, inspecting, testing, maintaining and repairing equipment such as: pumps, generators, transformers, switch gear, electric motors, controllers, compressors, blowers, and heating and ventilation equipment.

- Oiling, cleaning and making minor repairs to this equipment.

- Reading meters, gauges, and recording devices. Operating building systems such as heating maintenance and control systems (HMCS), electrical monitoring and control systems (EMCS), and process monitoring and control systems (PMCS).

- Keeping records and making reports. Performing work tasks utilizing the plant’s computerized maintenance and management systems.

- Being placed in responsible charge of watch.


Technical Competencies:

- High tension electrical experience (600 Volts or more)

- System specific expertise with pumps, motors, generators, air compressors, boilers, furnaces, HVAC equipment and controls.

- Electrical troubleshooting and repair, including the ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, ladder logic and wiring diagrams.

- Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLC’s)

Some of the physical activities performed by Stationary Engineers (Electric) and environmental conditions experienced are: while working near high voltages (600 volts or more), lift and carry objects weighing approximately fifty pounds; use power driven and regular hand tools; work with hands at arm’s length overhead while standing on ladders; may stand for an extended period of time; work in confined areas and in restricted spaces on surfaces such as metal gratings. The SEE may be required to work in temperatures ranging from 0 degree Fahrenheit to 105 degree Fahrenheit in varying atmospheric conditions such as high and low humidity; work in the presence of toxic and/or corrosive chemicals and moving parts of machinery and equipment. The SEE will operate forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks or other light equipment in a safe manner to move and stack materials.


Special Working Conditions: Stationary Engineers (Electric) may be required to work shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Preferred Skills:

- Motor Vehicle Driver’s license valid in the State of New York

- Working knowledge of MS Office including Word and Excel

- Ability to keep electronic logs of operations, equipment performance, maintenance activities and water quality.

- Ability to test operate equipment through PMCS, Process Logic Controllers or other.

- Ability to understand and use email

- Ability to research Operations and Maintenance (O&M) manuals to identify parts and supplies.

- Ability to contact vendors and obtain quotes for repairs and replacement parts.

- Ability to review and implement safe work plans and Agency Environmental Health & Safety policies.


Residency Requirement:

New York City residency is not required for this position.


Hours/Shift:

40 Hours per week / Shift work may be required including nights, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience in responsible charge of the operation of plants or facilities utilizing high tension electrical equipment (600 volts or more), including troubleshooting and repairing such equipment, in one or more of the following: electrical generating stations, electrical switching stations, water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, water pumping stations, wastewater pumping stations, other collections facilities or high volume ventilation systems; or
2. Two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in “1" above, and a baccalaureate degree in electrical, civil or mechanical engineering or in electrical, civil or mechanical engineering technology from an accredited college or university; or
3. Four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in “1" above and an associate degree in science or applied science from an accredited college or university with a major in water quality monitoring, wastewater treatment plant operations, environmental health, environmental control, or in electrical mechanical, or in civil technology, or in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering technology; or
4. Two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in “1" above plus three years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician; or
5. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician, including three years of full-time satisfactory experience troubleshooting and repairing high tension electrical equipment (600 volts or more) as that described in “1" above; or

6. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1", “2", “3", “4", or “5" above. Education may be substituted for experience on the basis that one year of experience will be credited for each 60 semester credits from an accredited college or university leading to a baccalaureate or associate degree in one of the disciplines described in “2" or “3" above. However, all candidates must have at least two years of satisfactory experience as described in “1" above, except for candidates who qualify under “5” above.
