Job Description

This vacancy has now expired.

Under the supervision of the Supervising Special Officer, the Special Officer provides physical security, safety, loss prevention and maintenance of order in accordance with agency orders and procedures. Specific functions assisting with the coordination of Office of Safety & Security activities will include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Patrol designated areas of assigned locations to maintain order, preserve the peace and safeguard life and property against fire, vandalism, and theft.
2. Provide routine information to visitors and direct them to the proper individuals, etc.
3. Prepare and write incident reports, maintain daily logs and document safety hazards and conditions.
4. Screen employees and visitors, operate and monitor security equipment.
5. Ensure health and safety protocols are met by members of the public.
6. Discourage and eject disorderly persons on premise. Transport, escort and/or arrange for transport of persons in custody to police precinct. Prepare and transmit all necessary documents relating to the arrest.
7. Assist with operational office functions as needed.

NOTE: The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) administered a civil service exam for the Special Officer title on 3/2/23. Therefore, applicants (candidates) that did not take and pass the exam will potentially not be considered, likewise applicants not reachable on the established civil service list will potentially be in jeopardy of being replaced with an eligible civil service candidate.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a state's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization; and
2. Individuals serving in this title are designated as Peace Officers by the New York State Criminal Procedure Law. Therefore, all candidates must be qualified to serve as Peace Officers. Incumbents must satisfy the training requirements established by the State of New York for Peace Officers and obtain certification. Once obtained, this certification must be maintained for the duration of employment.
