The Division of Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Transportation Planning & Management (TPM) is seeking a Community Coordinator to work on transportation and curb management-related studies, including the agency’s new Smart Curbs initiative. As part of its recent Curb Management Action Plan, NYC DOT announced Smart Curbs, a neighborhood-based initiative to improve mobility, access, and the flow of people, goods, and services through management and programming of curb lanes. Through Smart Curbs, NYC DOT will work in neighborhoods in partnership with Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) or other neighborhood organizations to take a comprehensive approach to curb management policies across a district by re-evaluating current uses and implementing new programming.
Reporting to the Director of the NYC Streets Plan, the Smart Curbs Coordinator will conduct grant-funded studies of current curb management policies and transportation conditions in a neighborhood and recommend comprehensive changes to regulations and programming. Key responsibilities include facilitating community meetings in coordination with consultants and internal and external partners; participating in public engagements including developing written materials, briefings, presentations, and reports; analyzing curb needs in a neighborhood using quantitative and qualitative methods; working with other units at DOT to identify new curb programming to address curb challenges; and evaluating the success of Smart Curbs projects. The selected candidate may be tasked with other curb management and transportation-related work as needed.

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
The preferred candidate will have excellent project management, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to balance multiple tasks and deadlines. In addition, the candidate should have: Expertise in data analysis and visualization to inform planning efforts and communicate to the public ability to participate in public engagement events on behalf of NYC DOT, listening to community members and elected officials interest in doing field work outside of the office and demonstrated experience using relevant software such as ArcGIS, Adobe Illustrator, PowerPoint, and Excel.
