JOB DESCRIPTION:

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The Building Maintenance Section (BMS) plays a critical role in keeping Department Facilities operating safe for staff and visitors as it oversees the maintenance for over 250 Department
Facilities Citywide. BMS manages multiple facilities renovations that support Department initiatives and unit relocations. BMS is comprised of uniform, civilian trades, professional and administrative staff.

In the Police Department, under supervision, the Sheet Metal Worker fabricates, erects, and repairs sheet metal structures such as ducts, metal ceilings, tanks, storm louvres, roofs, etc.; performs related work. Examples of job duties include: lays out, cuts, shapes, forms, rivets, spot welds, solders and sweats tin, cooper, brass and all forms of sheet metal; sets and erects sheet metal structures such as ducts, louvres, canvas connections, ceilings, dampers, etc.; develops patterns and templates in fabricating complex shapes and forms; and repairs metal ceilings, roofs, leaders, gutters; does simple rigging in making these repairs.

HOURS/ SHIFT:
Monday-Friday; 7:00 AM - 2:30 PM

Minimum Qualifications

1. Five years of full-time experience as a Sheet Metal Worker; or
2. Three years of such experience as described in "1" above plus sufficient helper or apprentice experience, or relevant education acquired in an approved trade, technical, or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of five years of acceptable experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of helper or apprenticeship experience, or relevant education.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
