The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Department's main goal is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY) seeks a full time Senior Unix/Linux Administrator. Reporting to the Database and Linux Support Manager,
the successful candidate will perform Oracle Linux systems management in conjunction with the Network, Security, Middleware, Database, and Intranet/Internet Application development teams. Key activities will include but not be limited to system installation, OS patch management, system integration, Middleware installation, infrastructure architecture design and on-going 24x7 system maintenance. Under varying degrees of direction, with varying degrees of latitude for independent action and decision, the applicant will be responsible for the efficient operation of all Linux/Unix systems. This role will include the elimination of equipment or services based on need and cost. The environment that the Systems Administrator will work in is very diverse and includes leading-edge technologies (Oracle Fusion Middleware Stack, consisting of WebLogic, OBIEE, IDM, SOA/BPM, UCM and Web Center Suite). The server hardware is a mixture of Oracle Exadata, Exalogic, PCA, ODA appliances and VMware VMs running Oracle Enterprise Linux and/or Red Hat. The storage infrastructure consists of network attached storage (NAS – Oracle ZFS) appliances. The selected candidate will be part of a core team that will serve as an escalation point for complex infrastructure technical issues.

Special Working Conditions: May be required to work shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

NOTE: This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per weeks, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program agreed between the City and DC37.


Minimum Qualifications

1. A master's degree in computer science from an accredited college or university and three (3) years of progressively more responsible, full-time, satisfactory experience in Information Technology (IT) including applications development, systems development, data communications and networking, database administration, data processing, or user services. At least eighteen (18) months of this experience must have been in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity in the areas of applications development, systems development, data communications and networking, database administration, data processing or in the supervision of staff performing these duties; or

2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of progressively more responsible, full-time, satisfactory experience as described in "1" above; or

3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and six (6) years of progressively more responsible, full-time, satisfactory experience as described in "1" above; or

4. A satisfactory combination of education and experience equivalent to "1", "2" or "3" above. However, all candidates must have at least a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and must possess at least three (3) years of experience as described in "1" above, including the eighteen (18) months of administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory experience as described in "1" above.

In the absence of a baccalaureate degree, undergraduate credits may be substituted for a maximum of two (2) years of the required experience in IT on the basis of 30 semester credits for six (6) months of the required experience. Graduate credits in computer science may be substituted for a maximum of one (1) year of the required experience in IT on the basis of 30 graduate semester credits in computer science for one (1) year of the required IT experience. However, undergraduate and/or graduate credits may not be substituted for the eighteen (18) months of experience in an administrative, managerial, executive, or supervisory capacity as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills

- Seven plus years’ hands-on experience managing large and complex UNIX and Linux systems (Oracle Solaris / Linux and Red Hat certification recommended) - Must have a strong grasp of virtualization concepts and principles and knowledge of how to maintain and work in virtualized environments - Must have expertise in security hardening of Linux/Unix based systems including application and maintenance of SCAP security profiles - Experience in architecture, deployment and administration of large oracle infrastructures in support of highly available mission critical web-based applications - Experience and willingness to support a 24x7 production environment - Ability to diagnose unique and complex system issues in conjunction with external vendors and internal FDNY technical teams. - Strong understanding of Unix/Linux performance tuning and related utilities - Ability to communicate technical information effectively, both orally and in writing - Strong understanding of the TCP/IP protocols (subnetting, routing, DNS, NTP) and load balancing technologies - Ability to support FDNY SFTP service and management - Strong Shell scripting (Bash/Ksh, PERL, Python) - Familiarity with proactive service monitoring concepts and best practices - Demonstrated knowledge of the following infrastructure principles and practices: o Scalability and capacity planning o Disaster Recovery (SiteA &SiteB) - Must be a self-motivated and work well with others - Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills - Ability to articulate root cause of complex technical issues and demonstrate the ability to formulate technical options for protecting the production environment - Ability to maintain infrastructure documentation for complete solution including architecture diagrams and Linux/OS runbooks - Experience with Oracle OEM is a major plus - Working knowledge of infrastructure automation principles (infra code) & tools (Chef/Puppet/Ansible) is a plus
