The Teaching & Learning Support Unit (T&LS) is a part of the Education & Wildlife Division in Public Programs at NYC Parks. This unit collaborates with staff throughout the Agency on the development of programming, resources and partnerships that foster public understanding of the value of urban parks and trails. Through this work, the Unit aims to transform passive park users into active park advocates.
Major Responsibilities
- In collaboration with the Director of Teaching & Learning Support and other high-level staff, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, develop, manage, and evaluate informal learning opportunities and resources that translate agency priorities and the practice of urban park and trail management for a public audience.
- Pursue and develop strategic partnerships within NYC's educational community to expand unit reach, including but not limited to city agencies, cultural institutions, community organizations and environmental non-profits.
- Collaborate with internal partners in Public Programs as well as agency-wide on the design, facilitation and evaluation of staff trainings and workshops.
- Identify appropriate venues (e.g. professional conferences, publications, and organizations) for sharing case studies, lessons learned, and best practices in informal education grounded in urban park management.
- Contribute to unit direction/vision and accompanying short-, mid-, and long-term goals.
- Manage and motivate junior staff.
- Research and stay up-to-date with trends in informal teaching and learning locally and nationally.
- Represent the Agency, Division, and Unit at high-level events, meetings and in proposals and reports.

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
1. Extensive experience in informal education program development, facilitation and evaluation. 2. Knowledge and application of best practices in informal education for youth and adults (including but not limited to experiential, inquiry-/place-based, environmental, and STEM education). 3. Familiarity with urban park management, operations and programming. 4. Strong program- and relationship-management skills with ability to collaborate with internal and external partners to achieve shared objectives. 5. Excellent project management skills with the ability to oversee multiple long-term projects. 6. Excellent oral/written communication skills. 7. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. 8. Valid New York State driver license.
