The Office of the First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright ensures that City government runs efficiently and focuses on many of the administration’s top priorities – from creating opportunities for young people to strengthening the city’s civic infrastructure – the office works in partnership with stakeholders inside and outside of city government to develop, scale, coordinate, and deliver policies, plans and operations in an equitable and sustainable way. The office of the First Deputy Mayor is seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Senior Policy Advisor to help drive work in the areas of public safety and community partnerships. This individual will support the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force in advancing priority initiatives across city agencies and working closely with community partners. The Senior Policy Advisor will support the implementation of the Blueprint for Public Safety by establishing and maintaining key community collaborations in partnership with multiple City agencies and City Hall leadership. The Senior Policy Advisor will develop and track action plans in partnership with community stakeholders and ensure programmatic and operational objectives are met. The Senior Advisor will serve as a liaison among agencies, community based partners, City agencies, local elected officials and other public and private partners with a particular focus on upstream causes of gun violence. The Senior Policy Advisor will act upon, design and develop policies, programs and initiatives that are consistent with the First Deputy Mayor’s goals and objectives. S/he will:
- Coordinate key projects (agency, inter-agency and among community stakeholders) that advance the goals of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.
- Collaborate with local Neighborhood Safety Council’s to design and track community safety efforts.
- Convene community-based partners to provide key agency updates, share best practices, troubleshoot common issues, and facilitate connections between community partners. Set meeting agenda, coordinate attendees, and facilitate cooperative and open dialogue with external stakeholders, including community-based representatives, other City agency staff as needed.
- Quantitatively and qualitatively assess policy related initiatives on an ongoing basis and make recommendations and/or presentations, briefings to stakeholders and Mayoral officials, making sure to appropriately communicate pertinent and sensitive information to City Hall leadership.
- Provide ongoing leadership and project management, and support implementation progress.
- Drive policy priorities through government and legislative process, as needed.
- Support the generation of project-related documents including schedules, project plans, presentations, meeting agendas, minutes, status reports, etc.
- Represent the First Deputy Mayor’s Office and the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force at meetings with key stakeholders, staff, and internal and external committees, etc., to develop and sustain positive relationships and networks, gather information, opinions and attitudes, identify stakeholder needs, provide interpretation and clarification, develop response options, and generate cooperation and buy-in to policy initiatives.
- Analyze and make recommendations on special projects that raise issues and/or concerns.


Minimum Qualifications

A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and three years fulltime satisfactory professional experience related to the projects and policies to be studied in the particular position including eighteen months of experience in a managerial, consultative, administrative or supervisory capacity.


Preferred Skills

- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college, and 7+ years of related experience or - A master’s degree in business, public administration, economics, public policy or related fields and 5+ years of related work experience - Excellent communication, writing, research, analytical and organizational skills, with ability to problem solve and pay close attention to detail - Ability to complete work independently with broadly defined work objectives and limited review of overall results - Ability to interface with executive level management and give senior level presentations - Expertise in desktop software (MS Project, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, MS Word) is required - An understanding of New York City’s operational agencies, a plus

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
