The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,000 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

DOC seeks a candidate to serve as a Photographer/Videographer. Under general supervision, performs supervisory work and work of moderate technical difficulty and responsibility in all fields of still, video and motion picture photography; plus performs related work.

The successful candidate will also be tasked with capturing DOC’s various initiatives, events, occasions, and marketing through the use of photography and video. The candidate will work closely with various divisional departments, graphic, and production teams to support the needs of the Public Information department. The Senior Photographer must meet DOC objectives and current demand for still photography and video projects.

Supervises and / or performs any or all of the following:
- Prepares photographic and/or photostatic reproductions of various subjects.
- Takes photographs for publicity and educational purposes; for special DOC drives,
- programs and projects; and for the purpose of illustrating pamphlets, press materials, advertising campaigns, and other publications produced and/or distributed by DOC.
- Possess expert production and editing skills related to still photography and video
- Makes videos, slides, stills, and transparencies of various activities,
- operations and equipment; may process, edit and splice videos.
- Prints, enlarges and mounts pictures and slides; records, files, and indexes
- photographs and negatives.
- Maintains and operates photographic and video equipment; may prepare requisitions for photographic supplies and equipment. Troubleshoots and performs routine maintenance on photo, video, audio, and lighting equipment.
- Does some design and copy work.
- Has an understanding of digital and social media applications of photography and video. Oversees digital asset management.
- Moderately completes paperwork, handles scheduling, responds to emails, and keeps records.
- May set up and operate a camera to photograph mechanical and other artwork to produce film or digital files.
- Develops and produces high-quality, compelling videos and multimedia projects that convey stories about the DOC brand.
- Collaborates with various team members and divisions, to generate concepts, then take the lead in production, shooting and editing.
- Shoots photographs and filming video in a various working environments.
- Ability to use existing original and stock photography and footage to produce projects.
- Completes assigned projects from inception to delivery.
- Experienced with Premiere, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, and/or other industry-standard software.
- Remains informed and abreast on changing technology, best practices, and tools in the photo and video space, ensuring standards remain high and techniques are cutting edge.
- Performs related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

1. Four years of full-time satisfactory experience acquired within the last twelve years as a photographer; or

2. Three years of such experience as described in "l" above plus two years of training in a approved photography program; or

3. Education and/or experience equivalent to "l" or "2" above. Each
year of approved training will be considered equivalent to six months of experience. However, all candidates must have at least three years experience as a photographer.

- Excellent oral/written communication and presentation skills interpersonal and collaboration skills - Demonstrated customer-centric focus ability to work independently and be self-motivated - Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks prioritize and coordinate multiple work activities and meet critical deadlines - Proficient in key photographic techniques: exposure, composition, focus and lenses.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
