Job Description
The New York City Department of Buildings is seeking a Senior Investigator to join its Buildings Special Investigations Unit (BSIU). This position is ideal for experienced Building Inspectors as well as highly skilled investigators with substantial buildings, construction, or regulatory enforcement experience who are ready to apply their expertise to complex, high-impact investigations.
BSIU handles serious matters involving construction accidents, unsafe conditions, licensing discipline or improper work, and other violations that pose risks to public safety. This role offers an opportunity to move beyond routine inspections or casework and engage in advanced investigative and enforcement activities that support administrative, civil, and criminal actions. This role is well-suited for experienced investigators with building code, construction, or regulatory enforcement experience and experience with accident response, compliance, or complex enforcement casework experience.
Candidates should be comfortable working in field environments, analyzing technical and regulatory information, exercising professional judgment, and managing investigations independently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Investigate construction accidents, unsafe conditions, and serious DOB violations
- Conduct in-depth field investigations, including site inspections, interviews, and evidence collection
- Review permits, inspection histories, construction documents, and contractor records
- Coordinate investigations with DOB enforcement units, the Department of Investigation, and law enforcement agencies
- Prepare clear, detailed investigative reports for enforcement actions and legal proceedings
- Testify at OATH hearings, court proceedings, and other formal venues as required
- Provide guidance and support to investigative staff, as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS
1. A high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four (4) years of satisfactory full-time experience in construction inspection, code enforcement, investigations, compliance, regulatory enforcement, or law enforcement' or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
REMOTE WORK:
This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program.
