Major Responsibilities
- Reporting to a Forestry, Horticulture & Natural Resources Director or a Borough Forestry Director, Deputy Director or Program Manager, manage responsible professional work overseeing major aspects of Parks forestry program, including pruning, tree planting, tree removal, sidewalk repair, invasive plant removal, stump removal, disease mitigation, forestry contract management, tree inspections and tree condition assessment, emergency storm response, project review and permitting and tree preservation prescriptions in streets and in parks and the proper use of forestry-related work request and tracking systems such as the Parks Forestry Management Systems (ForMS).
- Train and supervise Foresters and staff engaged in all aspects of urban forestry, including field surveys and inspections, tree condition assessment, contract preparation and management, consultant supervision, selection of quality plant material, data entry and storm emergency response.
- Respond to citizen inquiries and maintain working relationships with officials, community boards and groups, both within and outside the Agency.
- Review site plans and designs for private and other agency construction projects for appropriate design, tree and plant selection, installation methods and tree protection measures.
- Work with all divisions within the Agency, including Forestry, Horticulture & Natural Resources, all Borough Forestry offices, Operations and Management and Parklands and Planning to solicit and coordinate programs and policies related to urban forestry.
- Prepare briefings, reports, evaluations, budgets and correspondence related to above. Research new materials and methods related to Parks’ urban forestry activities.

MOVEMENT IN THE FACE OF CIVIL SERVICE LISTS IS PROHIBITED UNDER CIVIL SERVICE LAW.
1. A master’s degree from an accredited college or university, with a specialization in forestry or a related subject, or;
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, with a specialization in forestry or a related subject and one year of full-time professional experience in forestry or arboricultural work or;
3. An associate degree from an accredited college or university, with a specialization in forestry or a related subject and three (3) years of full-time professional experience in forestry or arboricultural work or;
4. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1",”2", or “3" above. However, all candidates must have at least an associate degree with a specialization in forestry or a related subject.
License Requirement
A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment."
1. Certification as an Arborist from the International Society of Arboriculture. 2. Strong knowledge of agency structure and divisions and/or government operations. 3. Excellent writing, supervisory, administrative, and interpersonal skills. 4. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and ForMS.
