Job Description

This vacancy has now expired.

THE SELECTED CANDIDATE WILL BE OFFERED A SALARY BETWEEN $60,889.00 – $70,022.00.

The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) protects and promotes the safety and well-being of children and families through child welfare and juvenile justice services and community supports. ACS manages community-based supports and foster care services and provides subsidized childcare vouchers. ACS child protection staff respond to allegations of child maltreatment. In juvenile justice, ACS oversees detention placement and programs for youth in the community.

The Division of Youth and Family Justice (DYFJ) provides a wide range of services and programs for youth at every stage of the juvenile justice process. Our goals are to (a) build stronger and safer communities and advance public safety by preventing juveniles from entering the New York City's juvenile justice system, (b) provide therapeutic treatment and services to youth in our custodial care, and (c) help juveniles access the tools they need to leave the justice system for good. We strive to help families and young people by providing supportive services that are responsive to the needs of individual youth and families.

Within DYFJ, Detention provides secure and non-secure detention services for justice-involved youth whose cases are pending in Family or Criminal Courts. DYFJ Detention is seeking a Senior Education Coordinator who will work collaboratively with the Department of Education (DOE), and DYFJ Detention Unit staff to improve school attendance for compulsory-aged youth, and student engagement for older youth who are independently driven to continue their education.

The duties and responsibilities of the Senior Education Coordinator will include, but will not be limited to:

- Collaborate with DOE to develop an understanding of individual youth needs as it relates to their area of support and academic path/goals in support of school attendance and academic engagement and education-related initiatives.

- Provide daily targeted coaching and support to youth including speaking with youth in their housing units to encourage school attendance and academic engagement and mitigate any concerns.

- Support learning in the classroom and through the facility by assisting students with academic assignments including homework, where practicable.

- Monitor and track facility-wide school attendance and maintain records and logs related to school attendance and engagement.

- Work with youth and DYFJ Programs and Group Services to develop strategies in support of daily school attendance and academic engagement, including youth participation in school time and out-of-school time programming including tutoring, college access, workforce development, afterschool support counseling, etc.

- Support family engagement by participating in Family Days and Family Team Conferences to provide academic updates.

- Attend meetings to report out on education-related considerations.

- Provide reports to Facility and division leadership regarding progress towards achieving educational goals established by ACS and DOE including attendance tracking, trends and outcomes data.

Note: The selected candidate must be willing to work in ACS-operated detention facilities to support implementation of education programming and school engagement for all youth in Secure Detention and participate in educational programming during non-school days.
