Supporting over 550 community gardens and 20,000 volunteer gardeners, GreenThumb is the largest community gardening program in the country. The Senior Coordinator for Educational Programs will develop and implement GreenThumb’s workshops and educational programming for community gardeners and the general public.

Major Responsibilities
- Under general direction of the Assistant Director, with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment, perform all aspects of workshops, trainings, and educational programming development.
- Develop community garden-specific programs in areas including but not limited to urban agriculture, composting, horticulture, soil health, green infrastructure, wildlife, group governance, public art, sustainability and ecology.
- Develop and implement in-person and virtual educational programs that support gardeners in cultivating thriving urban community gardens.
- Develop and implement written educational materials to complement programming.
- Build and foster relationships with and among garden groups, greening groups, schools, community organizations, and city agencies.
- Implement updates and edits to GreenThumb’s Gardeners’ Handbook, an educational tool for operating and maintaining a successful community garden in NYC.
- Represent GreenThumb to the general public by expanding awareness of and participating in community gardening.
- Create and manage program budgets, assist with purchasing, and track inventories of materials.
- Perform research, analyze data, prepare reports and complete tasks as assigned in areas related to urban gardening.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills

1. Degree or advanced training in education, environmental studies, ecology, urban studies or related field. 2. Experience in community organizing/engagement, community gardening, horticulture, urban agriculture, educational programming development, or related field. 3. Creative problem-solving skills. 4. Ability to work independently and across teams. 5. Strong verbal and written communication skills with excellent interpersonal skills. 6. Bilingual English/Spanish or proficiency in other language. 7. Previous experience working with volunteers, community groups, coalitions, or city agencies. 8. Availability to work a flexible work schedule, including events on evenings and weekends, as required. 9. Ability to work outdoors in gardens when required. 10. Proficiency with managing multiple assignments with competing deadlines. 11. Proficiency with the full Microsoft Suite. 12. Valid New York State driver license.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
