The Bureau of Public Affairs is the principal liaison between the Comptroller’s office and the public, mayoral agencies, and federal, state and local authorities. The Bureau provides community engagement, organizing and event planning capacity for the Comptroller’s strategic initiatives, and manages the Community Action Center, which provides direct assistance to New Yorkers navigating the City bureaucracy. Public Affairs is responsible for creating participatory structures for aspects of the Comptroller's work, as well as collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to support advocacy and legislative campaigns aimed at winning change that improves the lives of New Yorkers, especially those from marginalized communities.
The Constituency Liaison will serve as the Comptroller’s representative to citywide AAPI communities throughout the five boroughs. This position will report to the Director of Strategic Partnerships and Special Projects in the bureau of Public Affairs. Evening and weekend work will be required, sometimes with little advance notice.
Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Serve as the NYC Comptroller's primary point of contact on all matters related to citywide AAPI communities;
- Represent the NYC Comptroller at community events and evening gatherings across the City, including rallies, vigils, community board and BID meetings, houses of worship services, and non-profit hosted events/convenings;
- Create comprehensive engagement strategy to ensure meaningful relationships and collaboration between community members/stakeholders (including elected officials) and the Office of the NYC Comptroller;
- Identify priority issues in citywide AAPI communities and provide recommendations to guide intra-agency response and actions;
- Advise on and design programming and initiatives that leverage the tools of the Comptroller’s Office in support of AAPI communities;
- Work with the press/communications team to engage community and ethnic media outlets on an ongoing basis, including social media;
- Prepare briefings, newsletters, talking points and memos to advance the office's work in accordance with internal protocols; and,
- Perform other related assignments and special projects as may be required.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS / PREFERRED SKILLS:
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and three (3) or more years of experience in community organizing, government, advocacy, labor/unions, policy analysis, communications, public relations or in a related area; preferably, performing functions similar to those listed in the bulleted list of the job description above (ideally in New York City); or, a satisfactory equivalent of education and experience mentioned above.
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
- Demonstrated professional experience in community organizing, government, non-profit and/or advocacy spaces (ideally in New York City) - Self-starter who can identify and act upon opportunities to advance community interests through the tools of the Comptroller’s Office - Bi-lingual is a plus - Exceptional communications skills, analytical thinking, and an aptitude for coalition building are a must - Strong attention to detail, hardworking, team player committed to advancing justice, opportunity, and sustainable neighborhoods in NYC - Ability and enthusiasm to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders - Some familiarity with policy and budget issues that pertain to the work of the NYC Comptroller’s office - Specialized knowledge and experience in legislative, public policy, organized labor or issue advocacy familiarity with City, State and Federal legislative processes is preferred but not required - Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of applications.
