Job Description
This vacancy has now expired.
About the Office: The Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ) develops innovative solutions to public safety challenges, reducing crime and incarceration. We create vital programs that improve lives, generate community stability, and increase access to the support needed to maintain healthy and safe New York City neighborhoods. Recognizing that public safety cannot be achieved by law enforcement alone, MOCJ moves our city forward by collaborating with community and institutional stakeholders to improve efficiency, accountability, and fairness in the justice system.
About the Role: The Senior Advisor for Community Activation will serve as the agency’s lead strategist for field safety planning, trauma-informed practice, and staff preparedness. This role is responsible for developing safety protocols, training frameworks, and response plans to ensure that all MOCJ field teams can operate safely, effectively, and with emotional resilience. This role requires deep expertise in community-based safety strategies, crisis response, and cross-sector collaboration. Reporting to the Deputy Director for Strategic Initiatives, the Senior Advisor will support multidisciplinary teams in implementing initiatives that bridge community activations and public safety goals.
Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Design, implementation, and periodic updating of a comprehensive Field Safety Manual for all MOCJ staff working in community or justice-related field settings.
- Establish clear safety protocols and procedures for staff conducting site visits, community outreach, and interventions in high-stress or high-risk environments including pre-field briefings, situational assessments, and post-field debriefs.
- Collaborate with City agencies including NYPD, DSS, DYCD, DOHMH, and others to align community activation strategies with broader public safety and social service objectives.
- Integrate trauma-informed principles into all staff training, ensuring employees understand the impact of exposure to violence, crisis, or community trauma and have tools to manage and de-escalate tense situations.
- Lead the development of an Incident Response and Support Plan, including real-time communication procedures and post-incident support structures (e.g., counseling, peer support, recovery time).
- Design and deliver training sessions and toolkits on field safety, crisis navigation, de-escalation, and self-care for employees.
- Work collaboratively with law enforcement, public health, and social service agencies to align safety practices, share information, and ensure coordinated responses in the field.
- Launch a Wellness & Resilience Program that provides preventative care, ongoing check-ins, and resource access for staff engaged in challenging field environments.
- Supporting at site visits and community events
- Other duties as assigned
