Job Description

*ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT FULL-TIME ANNUALLY PAID PARKS EMPLOYEES*

The Environment and Planning division aims to protect, restore, and expand New York City Parks including green spaces and natural areas to maximize their benefits for environmental and community health and resilience. The Natural Resources Group’s mission is to protect, restore, expand, and manage New York City’s over 12,000 acres of natural spaces and green infrastructure across the five boroughs, including forests, grasslands, and wetlands. The Greenbelt Native Plant Center (GNPC) is the Division’s native plant nursery and seed bank. Programs provide live plants, develop bulk seed and bank genetically appropriate seed to meet city and agency needs. The Seed Increase Program (SIP) at the Greenbelt Native Plant Center farms six-acres of grasses and wildflowers sourced from the wild to provide bulk seed for ecological restoration projects in New York City.

Major Responsibilities
- Oversee all aspects of the Seed Increase Program (SIP), including seed farming, advising on seed-based restoration, distributing seed to projects around the city, and leading the city’s efforts to successfully restore seeded areas to ecologically diverse conditions.
- Lead farm tasks including propagating seed for installation in fields, preparing, planting, and maintaining fields, weed management, harvesting, cleaning, and storing seed.
- Provide supervision for staff, volunteers or crews assigned to your team, including managing schedules, assigning tasks, and maintaining productive operations across multiple worksites.
- Handle administrative tasks such as multi-year work planning and seed distribution among clients and partners. Utilize software (e.g., Excel, sales platforms, databases) for efficient program management.
- Establish and nurture partnerships with other organizations and farms in the region to promote the use and production of native seed in ecological restoration projects.
- Assist other operations of the Plant Center as needed.
- Operate and maintain vehicles and power tools, including mowers, tractors, and two-cycle equipment such as hedge-trimmers.
- Interact with staff and the public in a courteous and professional manner.
- Perform excellent research and record-keeping to maintain and implement best practices in a growing program.
