JOB DESCRIPTION:
The mission of the New York Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in our City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The Criminal Records Unit falls under the Central Records Section. The Criminal Records Unit stores and maintains reports of crime, lost property, and aided reports. The Criminal Records Unit provides information from these files to MOS, members of the public and authorized agencies as required by law. The unit operates in an exceptional work environment with a professional corporate like setting.

Under general supervision with some latitude for independent action, initiative or decision, this position will supervise, direct and perform difficult and responsible clerical work using both manual and computerized systems; assist in the performance of administrative work of moderate difficulty Involving the handling of confidential and other information and material. Supervise typed records, reports and forms; review and verify written information; receive, send, separate and distribute mail: obtain from and transmit information to the public or Department personnel; supervise and process Criminal Records Unit forms and documents; and perform related tasks when called upon.

0900 x 1700; Monday-Friday

Minimum Qualifications

A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization?

Skills Requirement: You will be required to meet the typing skills requirement by demonstrating the ability to type accurately on a personal computer at a minimum speed of 35 words per minute after errors are deducted. You must meet this requirement in order to be appointed.

Candidates should have a knowledge of basic computer programs, excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, a strong commitment to excellence and attention to detail, strong multi-tasking and prioritizing skills, the ability to work effectively with peers and staff in a team environment, the ability to demonstrate flexibility in adapting to a wide variety of tasks and functions and the ability to adapt to change.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
