The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.
The Personnel Bureau's Occupational Safety and Health Section coordinates department occupational safety and health programs and initiatives. Ensure compliance with federal, state and city occupational safety and health regulations. Recognize, evaluate and recommend measures to control workplace hazards through field inspections, hazard analysis, research and interviews.
The Safety and Health Specialist will be responsible for the following:
- Conducts inspection of Department worksites to ensure compliance with NYS PESH Act and federal OSHA regulations.
- Perform quantitative and qualitative assessments of chemical and physical hazards at Department worksites.
- Recommend appropriate equipment and techniques for protection against harmful substance, hazardous conditions or operations.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA's Respiratory Protection and Lead Compliance program throughout the Department.
- Provide technical information and consultation for personnel at all levels within the Department on occupational safety and nautili issues; prepare reports offering recommendations for improvement of Department health and safety policies.
1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.
NOTE:
Probationary Period
Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
Prior working experience in Occupational Safety and Health compliance is desirable. Experience in writing technical reports, drafting safety and health policies and conducting employee training is preferred.
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
