New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Division of Mental Hygiene seeks two (2) full-time Research Associates for the Bureau of Health Promotion for Justice-Impacted Populations.
BUREAU DESCRIPTION: The Bureau of Health Promotion for Justice-Impacted Populations (HPJIP) aims to reduce the negative social and health consequences of justice system involvement through innovative policy and practice change. By centering community, addressing racial inequities, honoring lived experience, and elevating trauma-and-resilience-informed-approaches, we promote evidence-based best practices to address the needs of those disproportionately impacted by the criminal legal system.
UNIT DESCRIPTION: The Health and Justice EpiCenter is responsible for providing support to HPJIP programmatic initiatives as well as disseminating research, integrating data to monitor and evaluate evidence-based public health policies/programs, and ensuring the Bureau’s work is rooted in scientific evidence.
The EpiCenter seeks a (1) Research Associate. The Research Associate will primarily be responsible for overseeing the program reporting and data system management as well as assisting with program research, monitoring, and evaluation.
Responsibilities will include but not limited to:
- Work as part of the Health and Justice EpiCenter team dedicated to promoting the behavioral and physical health of justice-impacted populations by providing program support related to data analysis and reporting.
- Coordinate data-related program activities including database management, data analysis and reporting.
- Perform data analyses and reports on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis.
- Prepare tables, graphs, and other data visualizations using Excel and Tableau.
- Conduct literature reviews, and draft written documents such as manuscripts, memos, reports, and presentations relevant to HPJIP program and research activities.
- Engage in project management activities to ensure that reports and written communications are completed in a timely manner.
- Prepare for and collaborate in meetings within DOHMH and with external partners.
- Participate in special studies and activities as assigned and other duties related to surveillance, monitoring, and evaluation.
1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.
NOTE:
Probationary Period
Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
- Experience with behavioral and mental health services research, specifically using administrative and population-level datasets. - Familiarity with programmatic efforts to integrate mental, behavioral and primary care. - Strong analytic skills, including design and data analysis using Excel, SAS, Stata, or R (or other statistical packages). - Experience with database management software (e.g., SQL) and data visualization software (e.g., Tableau or other software). - Strong project management and written and oral communication skills. - Experience generating written products for a variety of stakeholders, including behavioral health providers, program staff, senior leadership, and scientific audiences. - Experience with and/or knowledge of Electronic Health Record systems (e.g., EPIC, etc.). - Ability to quickly familiarize oneself with priority public health and health policy topics, without prior experience. - Experience and interest in working with justice-impacted populations. - Experience using a racial equity lens to manage and conceptualize data.
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
