The NYC Department of Design and Construction's Public Information Office seeks a Public Information Officer who will work closely with staff in the Division of Communications and Policy as well as other operational divisions in DDC including Public Buildings and Infrastructure to promote the agency’s work around the five boroughs and to respond to media and community requests.

The selected Candidate will draft responses to the media and public; research and draft press releases; and be asked to respond to the media and public. The selected candidate will assist with planning and coordinating logistics for project groundbreaking and ribbon-cuttings; arrange news conferences; and create and maintain lists social media opportunities and upcoming project milestones. The individual will monitor media coverage regularly and compile/distribute media coverage. The candidate will write newsletters, pamphlets, fact sheets and other outreach materials as needed and may reach out to news media to place positive stories about DDC, developing proactive and creative media strategies under the direction of the Executive Director of Public Information and the Associate Commissioner of the Division.


Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills

Candidates should have professional experience in government or public relations, journalism, communications, or similar field, preferably with an understanding of construction. Candidates must be detail-oriented and demonstrate diplomacy, discretion, reliability, and organizational skills. Candidates must be able to work with a wide range of constituencies and diverse communities address sensitive and complex questions handle conflict and manage various tasks. The role requires the ability to manage community engagement teams, and to communicate concisely and effectively across internal and external stakeholder communities. Candidates may be required to respond to media and attend some meetings or events after normal business hours, which may include travel. Computer skills with emphasis on Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are required. A valid Motor Vehicle Driver’s license is essential as is the ability to travel throughout the five boroughs of NYC. Bilingual is a plus.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
