The Bronx Borough President’s Office is seeking a highly motivated Community Health Liaison to advance the health priorities of the borough. The Community Liaison for Health and Human Services reports to the Borough President’s HHS Director, and may represent the Director at meetings with City agencies, inter- governmental staff, elected officials, community-based organizations, and community leaders. The Community Health Liaison is responsible for managing the communication between local institutions and CBO’s. The Community Health Liaison often coordinates with the community to talk about their needs and concerns, directing them to the organizations with plans on improving constituent’s lifestyles. The Community Liaison coordinates and spearhead’s Borough-wide taskforces and/or round tables in benefit to all bronxites. The candidate must have excellent writing, communication and organizational skills, especially in doing research and solving community concerns and complaints.
The position will require flexible scheduling, including some nights and weekends.
Role and Responsibilities:
The staff member in this position will be responsible for:
- Monitoring programs, grants, and projects administered by the Office of the Bronx Borough President, in the Divisions of Health & Human Services.
- Engaging with community-based health organizations and New York City agencies (NYC Health + Hospitals, Human Resources Administration, Department of Homeless Services, Administration for Children’s Services, Departments of Health and Mental Hygiene, Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, the Department for the Aging, etc.) as needed, to support communications with the BBP Office.
- Conducting planning, community outreach, and special events, as well as maintaining regular communication with health partners, in coordination with the Director and Deputy Director of HHS.
- Preparing reports, briefings, and memoranda for the HHS Director, other Directors, the Deputy Borough President, and the Borough President.
- Screening health related constituent cases routed to the HHS Director and communicating with the appropriate Agency for follow-up action.
- Serving as staff liaison to the Borough President’s Committees and Councils to support health advocacy and policy work pertaining to:
- Domestic and Gender-Based Violence Advisory Council
- Bronx Maternal Health Consortium
- #NOT62 Campaign for a Healthier Bronx
- Disabilities Council
- ETE/HIV Roundtable
- Working with the Director and Deputy Director to develop outreach and social media content for current committees (above) and councils under development: Bronx Substance Abuse Advisory Council, Diabetes Task Force
- Working with other units, including Policy, Community Services, and Constituent Services, as appropriate.
- Supporting all other HHS division or OBBP projects as needed.
1. There are no formal education or experience requirements for this position. However, the ability to understand and carry out simple instructions is required.
2. Candidates must be able to understand and be understood in English.
QUALIFICATIONS AND PREFERED SKILLS - Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, with 3 or more years work experience, or a health related Master’s degree. - Training or experience working in public health, government, social services, or community-based health services - Strong written and oral communication skills - Knowledge of government agencies pertaining to public health and social services - Knowledge of languages spoken in The Bronx is an asset for this position
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
