Job Description
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Environmental Planning and Analysis (BEPA) is currently seeking a Project Engineer to support implementation of high priority sustainability initiatives including implementation of the NYC Green Infrastructure Program and advancing DEP’s One Water approach for a holistic water management framework. The NYC Green Infrastructure Program is a multiagency effort led by DEP to implement distributed green stormwater infrastructure to improve water quality in NYC waterways by reducing combined sewer overflows (CSO) and enhance stormwater resiliency, supporting NYC regulatory requirements and strategic plans including: the CSO Consent Order between the City and New York State DEC, NYC Long Term Control Plans (LTCPs), NYC Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit, DEP’s Strategic Plan, NYC Stormwater Resiliency Plan, the 2021 New Normal Report, Rainfall Ready NYC, OneNYC and AdaptNYC goals.
The Project Engineer will assist on a variety of technical, administrative, and quantitative duties on a multidisciplinary team; typical tasks may include:
- Review of design and construction documents
- Field inspections of green infrastructure practices and other engineered stormwater management systems and components
- Assist in reviewing and preparing reports, presentations, and other data visualizations
- Assist in preparing, coordinating, and drafting annual reports and other publications; and support other large projects under the direction of BEPA senior managers.
- Collect, analyze, and integrate relevant data and research from various sources
- Assist with coordination with operational Bureaus and interagency teams.
The ideal candidate will have experience in environmental engineering with understanding of water resources and competency in geospatial and data analysis. The successful candidate will function in a support role to senior managers on a number of technical, administrative, costing, and policy planning tasks. This position will be part of a highly dynamic team working on a range of complex tasks simultaneously.
ASSISTANT ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINE - 20617
1. A baccalaureate degree in environmental, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in environmental engineering work; or
2. A baccalaureate degree in environmental, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials
engineering from an accredited college and master’s degree in environmental engineering from an accredited college.
A master's degree in environmental engineering from an accredited college can only be used to substitute for one year of full-time satisfactory work experience in environmental engineering.
- Experience in reading and understanding construction documents. - Excellent written and oral communication skills including communicating technical details to lay audiences. - Proficiency in handling large datasets and performing quantitative statistical analysis using relevant software (Excel, SQL, and R). - Proficiency in Geographic Information System (ArcGIS). - Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks under strict deadlines. - Team player, able to work with multiple senior managers and staff teams to help achieve the strategic vision of the Department.
