Job Description

The First Deputy Commissioner oversees the Community Outreach & Partnership Development Division, the Business Development & Special Events Division, the Communications Division and the Lifeguard Division.

Major Responsibilities

- Under general direction with latitude for independent initiative, provide judgment and discretion to NYC Parks First Deputy Commissioner, the Citywide Chief of Special Programs and the divisions under the First Deputy Commissioner’s purview.
- Manage complex projects and handle frequent re-prioritizations that will often require independent decision making.
- Proactively identify and exercise independent analysis and judgment in prioritizing situations requiring the First Deputy Commissioner and the Citywide Chief of Special Program’s attention.
- Coordinate resources and assemble appropriate reference and back-up material for all meetings and events.
- Conduct research; prepare presentations, briefings and reports.
- Monitor and track operations activities and assist with projects in support of seasonal operation priorities and Agency initiatives.
- Provide outstanding customer service and administrative support for day-to-day operation of the First Deputy Commissioner’s divisions and answer phones and draft correspondence to constituents.
- Other duties as assigned by the Citywide Chief of Special Programs and the First Deputy Commissioner.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills

1. At least two to five years of experience in complex coordination of activities, management or comparable experience. 2. Excellent writing and verbal communication skills. 3. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues. 4. Exceptional organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines. 5. Experience handling sensitive and confidential information. 6. Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. 7. Valid New York State driver license.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
