Job Description

Major Responsibilities

- Under general direction and reporting to the Chief of Staff for the Assistant Commissioner for Public Programs, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, perform difficult administrative duties for the Public Programs division.
- Work closely with the Assistant Commissioner for Public Programs, Chief of Education & Wildlife, Chief of Programming and Strategic Management for Recreation, Unit Directors, Borough Recreation Chiefs, Ocean Breeze Park Administrator, and division staff of all levels to assist in managing the strategic approach to program delivery.
- Coordinate meetings, prepare meeting agendas and take meeting minutes/perform follow-ups with meeting attendees.
- Research and write memoranda, reports, policy briefings, press releases, correspondence, and other documents with support from Public Programs leadership.
- Provide support in managing communication, and data and information reporting processes within the division. Maintain, organize, and collect information.
- Track and research community statistics and programming partners relevant to program development and implementation, including populations served historical data, related programs and landscape for grant opportunities.
- Provide support for professional development, training opportunities and performance incentive strategies for division staff.
- Manage, track, and review marketing and branding requests for Public Programs; liaise with Marketing to ensure compliance across the division.
- Work closely with other divisions within the Agency on a variety of functions and on the management of specific strategic initiatives.
- Maintain accurate records, prepare reports, perform filing and coordinate records retention.
- Manage office duties and special projects as needed.
- Provide excellent customer service by answering phones, directing inquires and receiving visitors and deliveries.

Minimum Qualifications


1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills


1. Bachelor’s degree in Business, Public Policy, Public Health, Public Administration, Education or a related field. 2. Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, writing and time-management skills. 3. Experience working in public programming including but not limited to recreation, nature education, aquatics programming, media education and/or community engagement. 4. Proficiency in Office 365 and all associated applications, file sharing systems, and online project management tools. 5. Ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends. 6. Valid New York State driver license.

Residency Requirement


Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
