Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists. The Office Livable Streets (OLS) is tasked with prioritizing strategic planning, community engagement, research, policy, design, implementation, and long-term management. Their goal is to create streets that are livable, supporting safety, accessibility, inclusion, resiliency, active modes, community cohesion, and economic vitality citywide. Additionally, they aim to enhance New York City's pedestrian, bicycle, and micromobility networks, providing comfortable, connected, green, and reliable transportation options across the five boroughs. They place special emphasis on Priority Investment Areas, mode shift, and reimagining streets. The office also develops innovative new programs, design typologies, project delivery, and analysis tools to meet the demands of a rapidly changing population with evolving needs and technologies.
Reporting to the Unit’s Design and Capital Lead, both positions will be working closely with the unit’s Project Development and Delivery team and the successful candidates will provide planning, coordination support, and community outreach for public realm capital projects in all five boroughs.
The Capital Project Coordinator responsibilities include, but are not limited to, management of the unit’s capital portfolio in coordination with other DOT units to ensure smooth transition through the capital pipeline. The role will be responsible for ensuring projects move through each stage of the capital process on schedule and with substantial community involvement, including through scoping, design, construction, and long-term maintenance. The selected candidate will work with internal DOT units as well as outside agency partners including Dept. Of Design and Construction, Parks and Recreation, Environmental Protection, Economic Development Corporation, City Planning, and others. The selected candidate will also work with public stakeholders and members of the community throughout the process. In addition, the Capital Project Coordinator will work with other teams within the unit to define capital project scopes that result from community requests, neighborhood analyses, past in-house projects, strategic initiatives, or rezonings.
The Design Project Coordinator will provide planning and design support for critical public realm projects in all five boroughs. Chief responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the design and review of public realm projects in coordination with the unit’s project managers and collaborating closely with other DOT units, ensuring design quality through all of the unit’s projects. This role will assist in designing in-house projects conducted, using DOT’s rapid response toolkit, as well as capital street reconstruction coordinated through DDC, DPR, or EDC. The candidate will be responsible for fully creating design concept drawings and related graphics for some projects as well as public facing presentations that effectively communicate goals to stakeholders, including the community, public partners, and private entities. The Design Project Coordinator will also develop new design standards for the city, working with other DOT units, leading research and information gathering stages, policy development outlining use and community outreach to gather feedback and educate the public. Supervision of interns and support staff may be required. This position requires organization, database management, communication, and graphic skills to manage the portfolio effectively. Other tasks include field analysis, preparing and giving public presentations, reviewing designs, and attending progress meetings.

Professional experience in the urban planning, design, or construction. Previous experience with mapping software (ArcGIS), Computer-Aided Design (AutoCAD), Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Excel. Ability to identify problems manage against tight timelines, prioritize among competing needs and opportunities, and manage multiple projects at the same time. Strong organizational, administrative, writing and presentation skills. Strong communication skills and a demonstrated interest in street design standards used by New York City, as well as cities both local and abroad. Public Speaking experience.

Additional Information:
This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program agreed to between the City and DC37.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
