NYC Parks GreenThumb provides technical assistance, educational workshops, operational support and materials to community gardens throughout New York City. Supporting over 550 community gardens and 20,000 volunteer gardeners, GreenThumb is the largest community gardening program in the country. Employees who work for 6 months or longer are eligible for healthcare benefits.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Under supervision of the Senior Program Coordinator, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, support implementation of GreenThumb’s Community Garden Improvement Program (CGIP) across the five boroughs through a variety of duties outlined below.
- Assist with the completion and implementation of various garden improvement projects, including but not limited to distribution of garden materials, installation of structures and facilitation of volunteer projects.
- Support GreenThumb programming, including workshops, public events and curriculum development.
- Engage with community gardeners, other Parks divisions and other City agencies to implement projects.
- Recommend priorities to support physical improvements to gardens and assist in procuring of materials and equipment and coordinate the delivery and installation of materials and structures as needed.
- Manage all inventories, budgets, and services related to assigned projects; obtain vendor price quotes and prepare purchased order requests.
- Perform research, analyze data, and prepare reports as needed.
Fees: Hired candidates will be subject to a processing fee of $82.00. Hired candidates who are not currently employed by the City will be subject to an $88.25 background check fee.
Duration: This position is from Fall 2023 to June 30, 2024
35 hours per week.

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
1. Some advanced training in a field related to the duties above. Project and team management experience. 2. Strong oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills. Creative problem-solving skills. 3. Experience with field work, environmental work, or community gardening. 4. Strong community engagement and group facilitation skills with diverse audiences. 5. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and work independently or in a team environment as needed. 6. Knowledge of New York City government and community-based organizations. 7. Bilingual English/Spanish or proficiency in other language. 8. Valid New York State driver license and comfortable driving in New York City.
New York Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
