The NYC Department of Sanitation is the world’s largest sanitation department. DSNY collects more than 10,500 tons of residential and institutional garbage and 1,760 tons of recyclables each day. While efficiently managing solid waste and clearing litter or snow from 6,300 miles of streets, the Department is also a leader in environmentalism committing to sending zero waste to landfills. The Bureau of Facilities Planning and Engineering provides engineering support services to DSNY’s operating bureaus in implementing projects of varying scope, pertaining to new garages and rehabilitation of existing garages, salt storage buildings, and other facilities under DSNY’s jurisdiction.
The Bureau seeks an experienced Administrative Architect to join its Special Projects (Design) Unit. Reporting directly to the director of the unit, the primary responsibilities of the position will include the following:
- Prepare architectural designs and plans and review consultant work for major projects for the construction of new department facilities, ensuring that designs are feasible and conform to applicable codes.
- Conducts research on complex and important architectural & engineering matters and prepares required proposals and reports.
- Conduct field surveys for design work.
- Draft specifications and review plans for compliance with code and project requirements. Ensure completion of specifications and plans within schedule.
- Oversees design consultants and reviews submitted documents for compliance to project requirements. Process consultant payments.
- Coordinate work with oversight agencies, end users, and other stakeholders. Act as the DSNY point person on projects administered by DDC.
- Advise supervisor of potential problems in design or schedule commitments, drawings, or test reports.
- Conduct investigations to assess building conditions and prepare reports.
A valid New York State Registration as an Architect is required. In addition, candidates must have six ( 6 ) years of full-time paid experience in architectural work, at least two (2) years of which shall have been as an administrative architect.
- Strong background in architectural & engineering principles, NYC building code, and NYC Zoning and their application to the construction of large new buildings. - Excellent communication, organization, and writing skills. - Demonstrated ability to work effectively and motivate project teams in supporting roles. - Proficiency in computer programs such as Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and updated versions of AutoCAD. - A valid New York State driver’s license.
