The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,000 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.
The DOC seeks to recruit a Program Coordinator to support the Department’s Volunteer & Service Provider Unit. In collaboration with the Executive Director of Program Operations and the Director of Volunteer & Service Provider Unit, the Coordinator will manage and monitor the integration of approved Volunteers and Service Providers. The Program Coordinator’s responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:
- Recruitment of potential volunteers, assistance with day-to-day coordination of
volunteers/service providers, process and maintain data in electronic formats;
- Create schedules, lead thorough orientation, process applicants fingerprints, create and
produce identification cards, and respond to inquiries from potential volunteers/service providers;
- Assess volunteers’/service providers’ skill and affiliation focus, their specific time of service
(long and short term) to align with the facilities and programmatic needs based on tasks and
schedules as determined by supervisor and/or DOC liaison;
- Coordinate and schedule volunteers/service providers to attend Mayoral Mandatory Trainings,
PREA Trainings, Situational Awareness Training, and any other required sessions as determined
and/or required by the Department;
- Gather and maintain data to generate various reports and presentations to external and
internal stakeholders;
- Develop and implement strategies to maximize the integration of volunteers/service
providers engagement and participation;
- Prepare and conduct presentations to internal and external audiences;
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
- Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook etc.) proficiency - Experience in a high-paced environment, with the ability to manage information and distribute appropriately - Ability to establish positive working relationships with multiple units and different levels of staff - Excellent writing, communication, inter-personal, analytical, research, problem-solving, and organizational skills - The candidate must be well-organized, proactive, resourceful, flexible, and able to communicate with staff (at all levels) in a fast- paced environment, meet deadlines, and perform with a high level of professionalism
