The New York City Mayor’s Office is responsible for overseeing city services throughout the five boroughs, coordinating public agencies and departments, and managing public property. The Team You’ll Work With

The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services is responsible for ensuring that agencies that oversee the City’s social services programming are run compassionately, equitably and effectively, and that the City’s public health and healthcare delivery systems are delivering results for all New Yorkers. Overseeing a portfolio with a combined budget of over $20B annually and a workforce of approximately 68,000 staff, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services is focused on implementing bold efforts within and across City agencies and Mayor’s Offices.

Agencies and Mayor’s Offices reporting to the Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services include: NYC Health + Hospitals, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Office of Chief Medical Examiner, Department of Social Services (Human Resources Administration and Department of Homeless Services), Administration for Children’s Services, Department for the Aging, Department of Veterans’ Services, and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence, the Mayor’s Office of Community Mental Health, and the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities.

The Problems You’ll Solve

The Policy Advisor will support the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services on both longer-term projects and day-to-day City Hall and agency business. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Project management: In coordination with appropriate team members, assist in monitoring and moving forward high-priority, interagency work-streams across the portfolio. Responsibilities may include liaising with agencies to track updates on progress, working with other team members to solve issues as they emerge, convening workgroups, elevating issues/roadblocks, and presenting on progress to the Deputy Mayor and team.
- Internal and External Stakeholder Communications: Support interactions with stakeholders, including other teams at City Hall, City agencies, and external stakeholders (community members, service providers, elected officials, etc) on policy issues, programs and communication plans. Ensure the Deputy Mayor is prepared for key engagements with stakeholders. Support in the preparation of talking points, briefing memoranda, and other communications materials.
- Research and analysis: Perform qualitative and quantitative research in connection with policy proposals, cross-agency projects, and broader health and human services sector analysis. Write memoranda with recommendations from research and elevate as necessary to Deputy Mayor
- General support: As needed, provide general support such as preparing briefing memoranda, staffing the Deputy Mayor at public events, providing background research and information, monitoring press reports and external activities, coordinating meeting planning and assistance, and responding to correspondence from constituents or elected officials.

About You

- You have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college.
- You have experience in community work, government work, political work, or activities in an area related to the duties as described above.
- You have the ability and experience to balance multiple demands and deadlines.
- You have excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
- You have excellent organization, time management, and follow-up skills, especially when managing multiple projects and priorities at once.
- You are proficient in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and Outlook.
- You have sensitivity, ability to maintain confidentiality, and use outstanding judgement on a daily basis.
- You have experience in community work, government work, political work, or activities in an area related to the duties as described above.

Minimum Qualifications

A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and three years satisfactory full-time experience related to the projects and policies to be studied in the particular position.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
