The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY), seeks full-time Assistant Electrical Engineers for Bureau of Fire Prevention.

Reporting directly to the Chief Examiner, the successful candidate will:

-Review fire alarm plans and documents and recommend approvals/disapproval's.
-Review fire alarm plans and documents submissions, including fire alarm equipment reviews for Certificates of Approval, Auxiliary Radio Communication systems, and plan examinations of the proposed fire alarm systems for residential, commercial, and industrial occupancies.
-Research codes and standards, review fire alarm-related technical reports, and participate in technical meetings.
-Review technical proposals for fire alarm installations submitted by other city agencies and the fire alarm industry.
-Prepare written responses for plan and equipment review submissions.
-Assist in development of technical guidelines for fire alarm equipment documentation submissions.
-Meet with city agencies, contractors, expediters to discuss fire alarm installation submissions.
-Coordinate and perform inspections of fire alarm installations to determine project completion.
-Coordinate plan review process with the Department of Buildings and other City and State Agencies.

Reporting directly to the Administrative Project Manager in the Fire Alarm Technical Assistance Variance Unit, the successful candidate will:

-Review fire alarm plans and document submissions, including fire alarm control equipment and Auxiliary Radio Communication equipment and systems for residential, commercial, and industrial occupancies. Fire Alarm equipment review would include heat/flame/smoke/gas detectors/control panels, audible/visual alarms/devices, alarm/trouble/supervisory signals, automatic/manual initiation, fire alarm panels, central stations, electrical line diagrams, etc. Auxiliary Radio Communication equipment review would include base stations, radio transmitters etc. to comply with FCC and NYC Fire Department communications compatibility.
-Review plans, technical reports and testing, and consult with management-level staff to support policy-making decisions.
-Prepare oral and written reports for review.
-Engage in studies or investigations related to fire alarm systems and radio communication systems, to determine design feasibility.
-Prepare written approval/disapproval letters for supervisors.
-Research the New York City Construction Codes and Fire Code; Rules of the City of New York, National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and Factory Mutual (FM) standards.
-Confer with engineers, architects and others in matters relating to the assigned projects.
-Participate in meetings with Industry representatives, City, State and Federal officials.
- Provide expert technical support to the bureau head and executive officials.
-Represent the Fire Department on Administrative Codes revision committees.


Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in electrical engineering work; or

2. A baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university.

A master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university can only be used to substitute for one year of full-time satisfactory work experience in electrical engineering. A degree in any other engineering area, or in any engineering technology area, is not acceptable.


Preferred Skills

-Knowledge of New York City Building and Fire codes, National Fire Protection Association standards, New York City Electrical Code, New York City Construction Codes, New York City Rules and Regulations, and NFPA Standards. -Professional Engineer license. -Years of fire alarm plan examination, design, and inspection experience. -Excellent written and verbal skills.
