About the Team:

The Asbestos Technical Review Unit (A-TRU) is a unit at the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) with the participation of the Department of Buildings (DOB). DOB staff assigned to A-TRU are responsible for the technical review and approval process for asbestos projects, technical reports (ex. A-TR1), and variance applications submitted by the regulated community to ensure regulatory compliance.

Additional Information:
This internship position reports in- person and does not require New York City residency. If selected, candidates must provide transcript enrollment verification statement from their school attesting that they are enrolled in an accredited degree program. Internship assignments may start as early as May, must conclude by the first week in September, and must not exceed a maximum of 13 weeks.



Position Responsibilities:

The Plan Examination Intern will, under direction and supervision of Senior Plan Examiner:

-Conduct initial review of A-TRU applications, draft approval documents.

-Conduct review of variance applications

-Log the number of Asbestos Reporting and Tracking System (ARTS) files reviewed.

-Assist Senior Plan Examiner with organizing and saving the review permits and files in the shared folder.

-Attend inter-agency meetings between DOB and DEP.

-Must be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program

Minimum Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
