The NYC Public Engagement Unit (PEU) identifies and executes proactive strategies to connect more New Yorkers to key city services. Relying heavily on data analytics, new technologies, and large-scale outreach tactics, the unit identifies New Yorkers in need of assistance and helps them navigate and obtain city services.

The Public Engagement Unit is recruiting one (1) Deputy Chief of Staff to support PEU’s Director and Chief of Staff with short-term and long-term priorities, particularly with regards to PEU’s COVID-19 relief and recovery efforts, including COVID-19 vaccine outreach and education, large scale public health education, the Emergency Housing Voucher program, and the Tenant Support Unit’s tenant helpline. The Deputy Chief of Staff will inform key decisions related to PEU’s housing, healthcare and civic engagement programs, make recommendations, and work constructively with partnering City agencies.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Supporting PEU’s Director and Chief of Staff with short-term and long-term housing, health and
welfare, civic engagement, and tenant support priorities.

Providing strategic and administrative support to the PEU Director and Chief of Staff related to
the development and planning of housing programs, vaccine and other public health programs,
and implementation of new procedures and guidelines.

Drafting documents and correspondence for PEU staff, external partners and City Hall

Represent PEU and liaise with external partners, including the Mayor’s Office, other City and State
agencies, community organizations, and private sector partners regarding PEU’s housing, health
and welfare, and tenant support programs.

Conducting research and drafting briefings for PEU Senior Staff related to PEU’s programmatic
initiatives.

Troubleshooting and participating in crisis management

Oversee program evaluation and outcomes on public health projects and initiatives

Project managing PEU Senior Staff priorities and special projects as they arise

Ensuring effective follow-up for internal and external meetings


Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in: (a) developing public health education programs, including identifying target populations, conducting needs assessments, designing educational materials, planning educational presentations or workshops, and evaluating health education programs; (b) presenting public health education programs; and/or (c) counseling in areas such as communicable diseases, substance abuse, assault, sexual abuse, and/or family planning; or

2. A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in one of the following areas: public health education, education, public/community health administration, public administration or business administration and one year of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above.

For Assignment Level II
In addition to meeting the "Qualification Requirements" above, to be assigned to Assignment Level II, candidates must have two additional years of full-time
satisfactory experience, for a total of four years of experience for candidates with a baccalaureate degree, and two years for candidates with a master's degree.

For Assignment Level III
In addition to meeting the "Qualification Requirements" above, to be assigned to Assignment Level III, candidates must have three additional years of full-time satisfactory experience as described above, for a total of five years of experience for
candidates with a baccalaureate degree, and three years for candidates with a master's degree; at least one year of which, in either case, must have been in a
supervisory or administrative capacity.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
