The Kings County District Attorney’s Office (KCDA) is one of the largest prosecutors’ offices in the country and is committed to developing and implementing innovative prosecutorial strategies that will fulfill our vision of keeping Brooklyn safe while at the same time ensuring fairness and justice for all. The Office investigates and prosecutes crime, assists victims, and implements crime prevention strategies to improve public safety and the quality of life of Brooklyn’s residents. KCDA has an exciting opportunity to work as a Paralegal Supervisor.
Brooklyn is divided into 23 police precincts, each with its own commander and community precinct council. To better serve these diverse communities, the office is divided into five trial zones that prosecute non-specialized felony and Misdemeanor cases. Each zone encompasses four or five police precincts within a specified geographic area, and is distinguishable by a color-coded designation: Red, Blue, Grey, Green, and Orange.
Under general direction, with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment, the prospective candidate will be responsible for the following:
- Provide eDiscovery support and reference to staff in all parts of the Office, including in the electronic retrieval, review, processing, and discovery of items pertaining to any case, particularly where the other staff member requires technical assistance.
- Work with other Office units and personnel to process unusual or non-standard items and ensure their appropriate processing for eDiscovery within a timely manner.
- Provide input into staff assignments and oversee and monitor the progress and status of case preparation and performance of paralegals.
- Provide feedback on job performance to staff.
- Keep Bureau Chief and First Deputy Bureau Chief informed of all issues and potential problems.
- Disseminate all relevant documents and information to staff.
- Assure that the Paralegals are thoroughly and accurately trained on how to screen cases and prepare files for arraignment.
- Obtain information and documents through visits to court and other governmental agencies.
- Review all files and documents for proper action to be taken.
- Work with Bureau Chief and First Deputy Bureau Chief on developing plans and recommendations to improve the knowledge, skills and abilities of the staff.
- Provide backup coverage for non-legal staff as needed.
- Complete forms or legal papers necessary to obtain materials.
- Provide administrative support for bureau in a variety of areas.
- Perform other related duties as necessary.
Preferred Skills
- Paralegal experience.
- Experience supervising and or managing a team or projects.
- Leadership skills and ability to exhibit dependability and good judgment.
- Excellent organizational, time-management and multi-tasking skills, including the ability to take initiative, prioritize duties, and work both independently and within a team environment is a plus.
- Excellent communication skills and writing skills.
- Strong attention to detail is essential.
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
