The Bicycle Unit is responsible for the nation’s largest network of on-street bicycle facilities (1500+ lane-miles), enhancing street safety, and increasing bike ridership in NYC. The team’s primary focus is on innovative redesign of City streets to expand and improve the bike network.

The NYC DOT is seeking to hire a highly motivated, creative, and critical thinker who is passionate about all forms of community engagement and views outreach and promotion as an integral part of increasing cycling and micromobility in New York City. This candidate will be serving as a liaison/ambassador for positive bicycle messaging. Under the direction of senior staff, the selected candidate will be responsible for: developing and advancing a proactive program vision related to cycling; writing and editing content for public presentations and various outreach tools; generating graphics and copy for print and digital content using publishing software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign; implementing new ways of communicating effectively with internal and external partners; ensuring consistency in messaging and tone; and promoting Bike Unit policies and initiatives while building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders. The candidate will also: draft high-priority correspondence to constituents; identify and address complex demographic issues involving safety and ridership; and develop studies and reports that affect project selection, budgetary needs, and policy shifts. Responsibilities also include leading monthly Community Bicycle Working Group meetings with community leaders and bicycling advocates, including contact list management and agenda creation; organizing and promoting large-scale public workshops related to the planning, design, and implementation of bicycle facilities; ideating and organizing cycling encouragement campaigns including administrating relevant purchase orders; and coordinating messaging between units across the DOT, other agencies, and external partners.

The ideal candidate should be detail oriented, accurate and a capable team player, and possess a positive attitude and excellent communication skills. Under the guidance and direction of senior staff, the candidate will be expected to work collaboratively and inclusively, seeking to cultivate continued professional development and effectively communicate with all stakeholders. The candidate will be responsible for adherence to all agency safety rules and regulations in creating a safe work environment for themselves and colleagues, as well as ensuring all safety equipment and gear are used and worn properly where/when required.

his position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program agreed to between the City and DC37.

Preferred: It is desirable that the candidate possess both a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver’s License and a strong interest in cycling on NYC streets

Preferred Skills:
Ideal candidates must be able to demonstrate strong creative and analytical problem-solving skills and have experience or demonstrate interest in transportation dynamics, transportation policy, bike share, and/or cycling. Excellent communications skills, including proficiency in writing for digital communications, proofreading and content moderation strongly desired; customer service experience strongly desired; significant experience across a wide variety of social media and digital channels, such as blogs, podcasts and other online engagement tools both personally and professionally; comfort with standard user conventions (hashtags, URL, etc.) and performance measurements across all major channels strongly desired; DSLR and mobile photography/video experience strongly desired; demonstrated experience with Photoshop, Lightroom, Final Cut Pro, and other design and video software; ability to establish excellent working relationships to support the successful delivery of agency communications strongly desired. A proven track record as a communications professional in areas such as marketing, visual communications, writing, and strategic planning; developing and executing creative strategies on social media, advertising, or marketing; At least three years of experience in a communications-related field. Experience working with the public, community groups, and New York City agencies, and strong verbal and written communication skills are also desired. Experience or interest in AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Excel, PowerPoint, and/or Adobe Creative Suite are desirable.


Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
