Job Description

The Department of Social Services (DSS) is comprised of the administrative units of the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS). HRA is dedicated to fighting poverty and income inequality by providing New Yorkers in need with essential benefits such as Food Assistance and Emergency Rental Assistance. DHS is committed to preventing and addressing homelessness in New York City by employing a variety of innovative strategies to help families and individuals successfully exit shelter and return to self-sufficiency as quickly as possible.
HRA/General Support Services (GSS) provides safe, healthy, and appropriate facilities for HRA’s various social service programs. Its many functions include facilities planning and coordination, design and construction, renovation, repair and maintenance, custodial and other building services, health/safety program coordination, lease and property management, land use and environmental review activities, contract administration for facilities services, and warehouse operations. GSS plays a major role in HRA emergency preparedness.
The Bureau of Printing and Distribution Services consists of the Print and Mail Distribution units that provides production and mail processing, high resolution digital printing, copying, collating, binding, packing, and distribution of such materials as letter, forms, brochures, procedures, manuals, newsletters, pamphlets, flyers, directories, and other publications.
General Support Services/ Bureau of Printing and Distribution Services is recruiting for one (1) Assistant Printing Press Operator to function as Operator, who will:
- Assist the Printing Press Operator in the operation of print and finishing equipment including operating digital toner and inkjet production printers, large format printers, paper cutters, folders, lamination equipment, booklet makers, tabbing machines, Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) check printers, etc. Installing inks, toners, and other supplies required to operate these machines.
- Assist the Printing Press Operator in the operation and maintain various types of print finishing equipment including booklet makers, cutters, slitters, creasers, folders, binding and tabbing machines, weight scales, etc.
- As directed, clean machines and call in contracted maintenance services. Perform routine operator maintenance and repair including using air compressor to clear out dust and debris, wiping down parts, and performing routine scheduled maintenance.
- Process work as directed by supervisor and follow the specification printed on the work orders. Ensure jobs are printed accurately, completely, in order and packed to lessen the chance of damage. Print is labeled so that those receiving the work knows what’s on the cart or in the boxes holding the printed materials. Update the job as completed and shipped in the job tracking system.

Hours/Schedule: 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday
1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and three years of satisfactory full-time experience operating a cylinder-type printing press using the offset-press printing process; or
2. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above.
- 5 years’ experience operating production mail inserting equipment from manufacturers such as Gunther, Bell & Howell, BlueCrest and Pitney Bowes. - Experience with other bindery equipment such as folders and tabbing machines. - Experience with USPS CASS and PAVE reports. - Ability to lift boxes of copy paper approximately 30 to 50lb.
